MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Stranger Things was an instant hit when it premiered on Netflix in 2016. Inspired by iconic horror and sci-fi movies from the 1980s, the series explores the paranormal goings-on around the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. A second season followed in 2017, followed by another acclaimed season in 2019. Fans have been waiting nearly three years for new episodes, but the good news is the wait is finally almost over.

You can read the official synopsis for the fourth season below, as well as take a look at all of the new photos released by Netflix.

“It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time — and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”

Stranger Things Will Have a Darker, More Horror-Like Vibe in Season 4

Netflix

Because it has taken years to get the fourth season to viewers on Netflix, the child stars from the series aren’t such young kids anymore. This has resulted in a darker vibe for the new episodes, as the older children means that going for a Goonies feel would no longer quite work. Now, the approach has been to delve further into the horror aspects of the story, and the cast and crew have teased this to be the scariest season yet.

“When we pitched it to Netflix all those years ago, we pitched it as the kids are…The Goonies in E.T.,” co-creator Ross Duffer said, via Netflix’s Tudum. “That’s their storyline. And the adults are in Jaws and Close Encounters and then the teens are in Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween. But, this year, we don’t have the kids. We can’t do The Goonies anymore. And so, suddenly, we’re leaning much harder into that horror movie territory that we love. It was fun to make that change.”

Stranger Things will debut its first half of season 4 on May 27, 2022. This will be followed by the second half on July 1. The show has been renewed for a fifth and final season as well, so there will be one more season for fans to look forward to after completing the fourth season.
