  • Succession to End with Upcoming Fourth Season on HBO

HBO won’t be moving forward with a fifth season of Succession, its creator confirms.

HBO

The upcoming season of Succession will serve as the last for the HBO series. Succession creator Jesse Armstrong says in a new interview with the New Yorker that the decision to end the show has now been made official. He clarifies that the news hadn’t been announced until now as Armstrong had been holding out hope for the possibility of continuing until it became clear that the time had come to wrap things up with Succession.

“It’s been a bit tortured, and I felt unexpectedly nervous about talking to you, because it’s all theoretical until this point, and I have tried to keep it theoretical for a whole number of reasons,” Armstrong explains. “Who knows about the psychological reasons, but the creative ones were that it felt really useful to not make the final, final decision for ages. You know, there’s a promise in the title of Succession. I’ve never thought this could go on forever.”

Armstrong might agree that it’s best to end the show at this time, but moving on isn’t going to be a walk in the park. He admits that he may come to regret the decision to wrap up the show vwdoew long, joking that he’s going to be trying for a reboot by the end of the year.

As Armstrong says, “I feel sad, and I have the-circus-has-left-town feeling that everyone gets who works on a production that’s good, and this one particularly so. I imagine I’ll be a little bit lonely, and wandering the streets of London in a funk, and wondering, What the f*** did I do? I’ll probably be calling you up in about six months asking if people are ready for a reboot.”
