Taika Waititi ‘Really Annoyed’ at Stranger Things For Using Kate Bush’s Music

Although plenty of people have discovered the music of Kate Bush through season 4 of Stranger Things, Taika Waititi couldn’t help but point out how the inclusion of “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” in the Netflix hit has “ruined” it for him. As a long time fan of Bush, Waititi is well aware that there are many people who now claim to know Kate Bush’s work, when all they know is one song.

Music has always been an important part of Stranger Things, with creators The Duffer Brothers constantly using classic 80s tunes at significant moments in the series. In Season 4, the music featured in the show has reached an entirely new level, with the 1985 Kate Bush hit shooting to the top of the charts, and Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” also gaining traction on the charts after featuring in the finale of the series. However, as someone who wanted to tap into the music of Kate Bush for his latest Marvel movie, Taika Waititi recently told NME that he was annoyed that The Duffers beat him to the shout. He said:

“You mean how they ruined Kate Bush? I love that show, but as someone who feels a real ownership of Kate Bush music… I’m really annoyed! I’ve become one of those old arseholes who’s like: ‘These kids never listened to Kate Bush, they’ve heard one song on a TV show! They don’t know Kate Bush! I know Kate Bush!’”

Taika Waititi Had Kate Bush Plans For Thor: Love and Thunder

Marvel Studios

Kate Bush’s music has seen a huge resurgence thanks to Stranger Things, but there was a time when it could have Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder that attempted to bring her songs to a new audience as Waititi had plenty of ideas of how to incorporate her music into Thor’s return. This would have included the addition of “This Woman’s Work” to a scene involving Jane Foster, played by returnee Natalie Portman. However, while all of Waititi’s Kate Bush dreams may have been shattered, he was able to bring the might of Guns N Roses to the party which certainly fits the bright, loud, retro world of Thor that has been created once again by the director.

It is hard to imagine the use of Kate Bush’s songs in Thor’s latest adventure could have created any more of an impact than that generated from Stranger Things, and it seems in the end everything worked out for the best. With Stranger Things dominating the streaming charts, Thor: Love and Thunder heading for one of the biggest opening weekends of the year and many nostalgic songs appearing in singles charts that they haven’t touched for decades, there is no one involved complaining too much right now. For many, after The Duffer Brothers’ ingenious use of “Never Ending Story” in season 3, and now Kate Bush and Metallica in season 4, who will be the musical stars to feature in the final season in a couple of year’s time?
