Penn Badgley shared his feelings about racy scenes, saying, ‘That Aspect of Hollywood has been very Disturbing.’

As noted by Variety, star Penn Badgley has recently been making headlines for revealing his thoughts on filming intimate scenes. Last week, on his podcast, Podcrushed, Badgley spoke about filming intimate moments and noted his distaste for shooting sexual scenes. The actor stated that he’d even shared his feelings with You showrunner Sera Gamble prior to filming the fourth season. As a result, Badgley said that Gamble gave him a “really positive response and they came back with a phenomenal reduction” for this season of the popular Netflix series.
This week, while speaking with Variety during two interviews, Badgley went into great detail on the subject and noted that the amount of intimate scenes he knew that he’d have to film for You was something that had made Badgley hesitant to tackle the role of serial killer Joe Goldberg.

Still, despite his discomfort with filming these kinds of scenes, Badgley admitted that he’d “done a fair amount of them in my career.” He continued, “It’s not a place where I’ve blurred lines. There’s almost nothing I could say with more consecration. That aspect of Hollywood has always been very disturbing to me — and that aspect of the job, that mercurial boundary — has always been something that I actually don’t want to play with at all.”
He’s also now older than his romantic interests on the show.
“Didn’t used to be the case.”

Even so, the actor noted that he’d prefer not to shoot intimate scenes saying, “It’s important to me in my real life to not have them.” He went on to clarify, “My fidelity in my relationship. It’s important to me. And actually, it was one of the reasons that I initially wanted to turn the role down. I didn’t tell anybody that. But that is why.”
Badgley has been married to Domino Kirke-Badgley since 2017. However, the star’s wife is the one who “encouraged” Badgley to take the role of Joe, “And I wasn’t going to listen to anyone more than her,” he said.
However, this season of You does have notably fewer sexual scenes than previous ones. Badgley told Variety that when he brought up his concerns to Gamble when she told him what would be in store for his character in the fourth season.
Badgley said, “One of my responses was, ‘It sounds like we’re in a good place for me to …’ — I told her kind of my desire, and she immediately was accepting and responsive. I’m always very practical. I said I know it can’t be none, because there’s something coded into the DNA of the show, and I signed the contract, and so it is what it is but as little as possible would be my preference.”
