  • Melanie Lynskey Claps Back at Body-Shaming Critic: ‘That’s What Henchmen Are For’

Melanie Lynskey plays revolutionary leader Kathleen in the post-apocalyptic HBO series The Last of Us.

Melanie Lynskey is making it known that she has no time for body-shaming critics.

The actress made her first appearance on HBO’s The Last of Us Sunday as Kathleen, the hardened leader of a revolutionary movement in post-apocalyptic America. While the majority of the show’s constantly growing audience is crazy for the ruthless Kathleen, one critic didn’t think that Lynskey looked the part—and took to Twitter to share her opinion.

“Her body says life of luxury…not post-apocalyptic warlord. Where is Linda Hamilton when you need her?” User Adrianne Curry wrote, referencing the actress who played the buff Sarah Connor in the Terminator franchise.

Lynskey soon shared a screenshot of the Tweet to her own account, quickly shutting down the negative comments about her body.

“Firstly—this is a photo from my cover shoot for InStyle magazine, not a still from HBO’s The Last of Us,” Lynskey writes, also sharing the picture in question.

Even if it had been a still from The Last of Us, the actress says the comment was still unwarranted—Kathleen’s power is more intellectual than physical, and she’s got the brute force behind her.

“And I’m playing a person who meticulously planned & executed an overthrow of FEDRA. I am supposed to be SMART, ma’am. I don’t need to be muscly. That’s what henchmen are for,” she added.

Showtime

This is not the first time the Yellowjackets actress has shut down social media critics over The Last of Us.

Between the HBO series’ third episode—which told the tragic tale of gay couple Frank and Bill—and the announcement of Lynskey’s character, irate homophobes accused the network of “more homosexual agenda pushing” despite no indication of her character’s sexuality.

Lynskey—who is married to actor Jason Ritter herself—had a quick comeback in this situation as well and jumped at the opportunity to cheekily push the alleged “homosexual agenda.”

“OMG yes let me push that homosexual agenda just by showing up!” the actress Tweeted earlier this month, amassing over 70k likes from fans and fellow actors alike. “An honour!”

While The Last of Us normally airs Sundays on HBO and HBO Max, fans can catch up with Kathleen and her crew on Friday this week—thanks to Superbowl Sunday.
