In just a few weeks, it will have been three years since Matt Reeves’ The Batman hit theaters around the world. This latest iteration of the world’s greatest detective made sure the character lived up to that name, as Reeves and the rest of the team crafted a criminal conspiracy thriller evocative of films like Chinatown, The French Connection, and Zodiac. The film was a box office hit and received rave reviews for its impressive storytelling, production design, and visceral action, with a sequel immediately greenlit. However, several production delays have made the wait for The Batman Part II a long one, but we now have an exciting update on the project courtesy of Batman himself, Robert Pattinson.
While promoting his film Mickey 17 at a red carpet event, the actor was asked if cameras have already started rolling for The Batman Part II. And while the actor said the sequel hadn’t begun production, he also revealed when filming was going to start, saying “we haven’t shot it yet I think [we begin shooting] at the end of the year.” When further pressed on if there were any story details the actor could give away, Pattinson responded with “not yet. It’s cool though. It’s cool.”
The momentum following the large amounts of hype generated by The Batman and Reeves’ planned trilogy has somewhat stalled in the years since the film was released. Thankfully, the Golden Globe-winning spinoff series The Penguin helped to remind viewers of the awesome storytelling potential of this new Gotham City. Now, with a filming date seemingly set, it’s time for fans to prepare themselves for another Batman film.
‘The Batman Part II’ Has Been a Long Time Coming
With a stellar supporting cast featuring the likes of Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffery Wright as Lieutenant James Gordon, and Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, The Batman was so well received for its intense storytelling and visceral action. Matt Reeves and Peter Craig’s screenplay was one that was also carefully worked on, and it seems that a large reason for the wait for The Batman Part II stems from the writer/director’s need to perfect the story and ensure the sequel maintains (if not surpasses) the level of quality of the first film.

Comic book television series and films are rarely recognized during award season, but Colin Farrell bucked that trend with his win for ‘The Penguin.’
Additionally, much has changed between DC Studios and Warner Bros. since the release of the first film, with an entirely new DC Universe being created since The Batman was released. James Gunn, the new co-CEO and Chairman of DC Studios, has assured fans that Reeves’ trilogy won’t be going anywhere, and will remain in its own continuity with the Elseworlds label. This will allow filmmakers like Reeves to take more creative risks and create distinct visions for characters without being in the confines of a shared continuity.
Now, with Gunn and his producing partner/co-CEO Peter Safran also providing input on the story for The Batman Part II, the film will have an extra set of eyes on it that could help to bolster its quality. If anything, Gunn and Safran are supportive of Reeves’ singular vision, as the director has shared in the past that the heads of DC Studios are “excited” by the project. Whatever the case, with a story seemingly nailed down, and a filming date set, it’s more likely than ever that The Batman Part II will meet its October 2027 release date.
