The Coen Brothers have established themselves as the brotherly duo behind some of the best deadpan comedy thrillers of all-time, and one of their best is now streaming for free. The pair began their directorial career in 1984 with Blood Simple, starring John Getz and Frances McDormand. They followed that up with an incredible run of movies, including Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, and The Hudsucker Proxy. But, in 1996, they released what many claim to be their pièce de résistance, Fargo.
Fans of the Coen Brothers, and new viewers can now stream Fargo absolutely free on Tubi. Like many of their movies, Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed Fargo, while assembling an all-star cast for the film. The movie re-united them with McDormand (who is also Joel’s wife), while adding in William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Stormare, all in break-out roles.
Fargo earned several Oscar nominations, and the Coen Brothers’ first win, in 1997. The film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor (for Macy). The duo won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay (which was then titled “Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen”) while McDormand won for Best Actress.
The official plot synopsis reads:
“Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a car salesman in Minneapolis who has gotten himself into debt and is so desperate for money that he hires two thugs (Steve Buscemi), (Peter Stormare) to kidnap his own wife.”
Fargo helped to define the Coen’s unique style of storytelling, one which always asked the viewer, “what would you do in this situation?” While it might not seem like much by today’s standards of multiple movies crossing the $1 billion mark each year, Fargo was a box office hit. The film grossed $60 million thanks to strong word-of-mouth, against an estimated budget of just $7 million. It also opened in 1996, what was then known as the ‘year of the art house film,’ with indies winning major awards and accolades, including The English Patient.
The film currently ranks as the 175th best movie of all-time, according to IMDb’s rankings, ahead of Warrior, starring Tom Hardy, and just behind the Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks-led, Catch Me If You Can.
Will ‘Fargo’ be Renewed for Season 6?
18 years after Fargo hit theaters, viewers at home tuned in to watch a brand-new TV series based on the Coen brothers’ beloved movie. FX’s Fargo was a seasonal anthology, with each season focusing on a new murder mystery and starring a phenomenal cast. The first season starred Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Colin Hanks, and Allison Tolman. Since then, the show’s cast has included A-list names like Bob Odenkirk, Chris Rock, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jon Hamm, Kirsten Dunst, Ewan McGregor, Jessie Plemons, Kieran Culkin, and so many more.
