The Crown Becomes Netflix’s Streaming Jewel with Multiple Emmy Award Wins

Netflix reigned supreme at this years’ Primetime Emmy Awards thanks to a host of big wins, including a stellar night for royal drama series The Crown, which took Best Drama Series as well as four acting wins among its haul. The series, which will air season five in 2022 and then conclude with a sixth season, was hotly tipped to win big at the awards on Sunday, but had some strong competition to contend with from the likes of The Handmaid’s Tale, Bridgerton, Lovecraft Country and Pose, but ultimately this proved to be a night for Netflix and The Crown became a shining jewel across the night.

As well as taking home the Best Drama award, The Crown also swept the acting in a drama categories, seeing triumph for Josh O’Connor and Olivia Colman in the lead categories and Tobias Menzies and Gillian Anderson taking the supporting role awards. To make their point even clearer, the show also picked up the Writing for a Drama Series award for Peter Morgan and Director for a Drama Series for Jessica Hobbs, specifically for the episode “War”. In addition to the awards picked up at last week’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards Ceremony, the series has dominated this year’s event in a way that few would have predicted.

Olivia Colman became the second actress to win an Emmy for portraying Queen Elizabeth II in the semi-fictionalized drama, following Claire Foy who won the same award for the role in 2018, and also won Guest Actor at this year’s Creative Arts Emmy’s for reprising the role. On winning her award, Colman made a short emotional speech, saying, “I’m going to be very quick because I’m very teary. I wish my dad was here to see this. I lost my dad during Covid and he would have loved all this.” Colman will be replaced by Imelda Staunton in the new series of The Crown, which brings a new era to the royal saga.

On picking up her Best Supporting Actress Role for playing Margaret Thatcher in the series, Gillian Anderson left some Emmy viewers confused, by reverting to her American accent when accepting the award rather than the British accent that she has adopted for many of her more recent roles including Netflix’s Sex Education, which just premiered its third season on the platform. The Emmy was Anderson’s first in 24 years, and she accepted it from London, saying, “Oh my goodness. First, I want to say thank you to Peter Morgan for creating this role, and to Netflix for everything. Everything.”

She continued to dedicate the award to manager Connie Freiberg, “who believed in me when no one else would. And believed in my talent when I didn’t even think that I had talent. Who always advised me to take the high road. Who was one of the best friends that I’ve ever had in my life. And who wore the same dress five years running to every award show three times a year that she went with me to. Before anybody knew that it was cool, Connie, I love you! This is for you.”

Tobias Menzies picked up his award for playing Prince Phillip, while Josh O’Connor received his for playing Prince Charles. Also nominated was Emma Corrin, for her portrayal of Princess Diana in the series, but she ended up being pipped to the post by Colman, despite taking the Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards previously for the role and being hotly tipped to do the same at the Emmys. The Crown’ s first four seasons are currently streaming on Netflix, while season five arrives in 2022.
