The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 2 Review: Haunted Heights

Critic’s Rating: 3.5 / 5.0

3.5

The Equalizer veered away from typical crime cases in this episode, mixing things up.

In honor of spooky season, the hour was filled with murder, fear, and — you guessed it — the supernatural.

Who would think a pair of doll hands could be so creepy?

(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

The episode was aptly titled “Haunted Heights,” and that it was.

The hour started with a nightmarish scene of a woman named Priscilla running from something in the dark in her apartment building. She ends up dead after falling down a flight of stairs.

(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

Her granddaughter Carla hires Robyn and the team to find out what happened.

Robyn takes the case, thinking they are after a stalker.

But we know better after seeing the creepy opening scene.

The story gets stranger after the police ruled it an accidental death, but Robyn isn’t buying it.

(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

After Season 5 Episode 1, it was surprising to see Robyn update Harry about the case. I was sure she would be flying solo after she was left in a dangerous situation.

Robyn accepts Harry and Mel’s apologies after they left her to fend for herself in a very dangerous situation.

I think Robyn was too quick to forgive them both.

Her easygoing demeanor towards them was hard to believe in this episode, and it is not over.

The mistrust between them as a team will surely be an issue that will pop up again.

Robyn’s unhealthy belief that she can only rely on herself will also be a future problem I hope the writer’s room decides to address.

(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

Especially if these three are trying to get back to the way they were before.

Harry Sets Out To Debunk The Supernatural

After arriving at the apartment building and witnessing the strange video footage of Priscilla’s death, which the creepy super Leo unwillingly supplies, Robyn and Harry believe they have a completely different situation on their hands.

Robyn seems indifferent about the supernatural. Harry is determined to debunk the paranormal that all the tenants believe is terrorizing their building.

In Harry fashion, he sets up motion sensors, heat sensors, and cameras all over the building.

He plans to stay the night. You couldn’t pay me enough with those flickering lights and dark hallways!

(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

The scene brought much-needed humor to the episode until I realized he would spend the night alone without Robyn. It was not a good choice.

These two didn’t learn from last week’s drama because Robyn left Harry behind so that she could help Marcus.

Marcus Needs A Favor

It’s clear Marcus has no idea what Robyn has been dealing with because he needs a favor: tracking down an old cellmate of a criminal named Diablo, who he’s hunting down.

Robyn heads to the Bronx and manages to find the man Marcus is looking for. She gets a lead on where to find Diablo.

Meanwhile, Harry is making some serious headway on his and Robyn’s case.

(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

Harry is sure he has proved that there isn’t anything supernatural about Priscilla’s death.

She was scared by noises being made by a squatter named Bobby, whom he finds living in the attic.

It became apparent that this wasn’t the case when Harry started acting strange in the apartment building hall while Bobby remained unaffected.

Harry’s Crazy Hallucinations Has Mel Back On The Job

During a phone conversation with Mel, Harry begins swatting at something that isn’t there.

Mel makes it to the apartment building in time to save him from his hallucinations.

(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

Together, they realize what Harry knew all along — the forces at play here aren’t supernatural, but someone purposely exposing the residents to carbon monoxide to make them hallucinate.

My money was on the sister, who co-owned the apartment building with her brother. But it was his girlfriend who hoped to drive the tenants out so that her boyfriend would sell.

Aunt Viola’s Receives Scary News

Much of the episode focused on Robyn and Harry’s case, as well as Mel’s continued struggles with her mental health and group meetings.

But what about Aunt Viola’s possible health problems?

(Courtesy of CBS)

We learned in this episode that she needs a biopsy following her recent mammogram.

Not much else was said about her health scare, which seems like the wrong time to introduce such a serious storyline.

The writer’s room spent more time on Delilah’s senior portraits, which was truly a boring storyline.

Delilah changed out her braids for curls after feeling insecure with her love interest, Cam.

In the end, she learned that Cam wasn’t ghosting her but had been busy.

(Michael Greenberg/CBS)

Meanwhile, when it comes to relationships, Robyn and Marcus remain the same in their brief conversations. Not much else is happening between them.

These two are avoiding any real conversation about their current status, which is frustrating!

Will he be returning back to New York sooner than we think after appearing homesick in the closing scene?

Will Aunt Viola tell Robyn and Delilah about her health scare? Miles was missing in action this week. Will he be making a return to romance Robyn again?
