The IT Crowd Still Has a Future Says Star Chris O’Dowd

Summary

  • Chris O’Dowd would like to do an
    IT Crowd
revival, but it would have to acknowledge the many changes in technology over the years.
  • Co-star Katherine Parkinson was less optimistic about the concept of a reboot, citing her personal growth since the show ended. Additionally, creator Graham Linehan has ostracized himself after a series of transphobic comments.
  • O’Dowd currently stars in the warm and funny fantasy dramedy,
    The Big Door Prize
, which is returning with a second season on April 24.

One of the best British sitcoms, The IT Crowd, could make a comeback in the future. The iconic series, which spawned a failed US remake with Joel McHale and Jessica St. Clair, ended in 2013 after four seasons and a special finale episode. The series helped catapult its stars, Richard Ayoade, Katherine Parkinson, and Chris O’Dowd into the comedic limelight, and O’Dowd wants to see the characters reunite.

In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb to promote his upcoming Apple TV+ series The Big Door Prize, Chris O’Dowd commented on the show’s potential future. “Oh never say never,” O’Dowd said. “I love seeing characters on television come together after they haven’t been together for a very long time.”

O’Dowd also stated that an IT Crowd revival would need to address the drastic advancements in technology over the last decade. “I think those ones would be different because it was such a techy show, and tech has gone forward so quickly. But people are still going around fixing computers,” O’Dowd remarked. Channeling the awkward comedy of his beloved character, Roy, O’Dowd went on to joke, “I guess [laughs]. It’s not like they’re perfect. Sorry, Apple, they still need fixing sometimes!”

An IT Crowd revival/reboot is something fans have been desperate for since the moment the show stopped airing in 2013. Unfortunately though, O’Dowd’s cast mate, Katherine Parkinson, doesn’t hold the same optimism for the series coming back. Speaking to The Sun earlier this year, Parkinson said, “I don’t think so,” when asked if a reboot or spin-off was in the works. Parkinson went on to say, “I love that people still watch it but it was so long ago that I did it, and it was at a different time in my life.”

Sadly, it seems that green-lighting an IT Crowd revival won’t be as simple as “turning it off and back on again.” Especially since the show’s creator, Graham Linehan, has been the subject of controversy recently following a number of transphobic statements, which resulted in the Irish writer being banned from X (formerly Twitter) in 2020. If The IT Crowd were to be revived in the future, it would likely be with a new creative team.

What Is The IT Crowd?

First debuting on British TV in 2006, The IT Crowd followed the misadventures of three IT support staff in a massive, nondescript company. O’Dowd starred as Roy, a co-worker so lazy he built an automated machine that answered his phone calls for him. Alongside him was Moss, played by Richard Ayoade, a prime example of the ’00s geek stereotype. The team was overseen by their supervisor Jen, played by Katherine Parkinson, who landed the job after lying about her IT skills on her resume, and can’t convert a Word document into a PDF. Over its four seasons, the series won three BAFTA Awards and an international Emmy Award.

Related Before 3 Body Problem and the MCU, Benedict Wong’s Claim to Fame Was in Quirky British Comedies Before appearing in Netflix’s hit sci-fi series, Benedict Wong cameoed in the best British comedies.

The series featured a ton of famous guest stars, including Noel Fielding, who played a goth living in the server room, Matt Berry, who took over as the company’s eccentric CEO from the show’s second season, and MCU star Benedict Wong, who played Prime, a member of the exclusive 8+ club – a club for people who have won the British game show Countdown over eight times.

Chris O’Dowd currently stars in Apple TV+’s The Big Prize Door. The new sci-fi series is based on the novel by M.O. Walsh and explores a small town which is forever changed when a machine, claiming to reveal the inhabitants’ ‘true potential,’ mysteriously appears.

The Big Prize Door
is currently streaming on Apple TV+. Season two premieres globally with three episodes on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, followed by one new episode weekly through June 12, 2024 on Apple TV+.
