The Rings of Power Star Breaks Down Why Elrond Is Different To His LOTR Appearance

The Rings Of Power is set long before Frodo begins his journey to Mordor, and Robert Aramayo has explained how that makes Elrond much different.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has a very big advantage in being set so many years before Peter Jackson’s movies that there are very few characters that appear in both stories. However, the Elves of Middle-Earth have lived long enough to see two well-known characters being a part of both adaptations; Galadriel and Elrond. There have been plenty of social media comments made about the differences between Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel and Cate Blanchett’s LOTR and The Hobbit iteration, but there has been little said about Robert Aramayo’s Elrond and his differences to Hugo Weaving’s older version. Now the actor has been addressing it himself in a recent interview.

In The Rings of Power, Elrond is much younger and less serious than his older counterpart, and in the last episodes Elrond has featured heavily in the story as he visited the Dwarf Kingdom of Khazad-dum, a place very familiar to those with any knowledge of Tolkien’s epic fantasy. However, this is many year’s before the Balrog makes the Mines of Moria his domain, and therefore the Dwarf mines are full of life, and that lends itself to part of the story between Elrond and Prince During IV.

As Aramayo explained to Vulture, the cynical, world-wise Elf seen in Peter Jackson’s movies is the one The Rings of Power’s Elrond will become thanks to the years between the two iterations of the characters and the events he witnesses on his journey from one age to the next. Aramayo said:

“I grew up with those movies, and I love his performance, and I think it’s natural for people to compare the performance. But right now, Elrond’s a very young elf with so much to go before we get to the Council of Elrond in The Fellowship of the Ring. He’s lived through so many defeats by that point, so I was excited to just start with this young elf who still has a lot to learn. That felt like an exciting place to begin. He’s going to live thousands and thousands of human lifetimes until he gets to that point!”

Not All Fans Have Been On Board With The Changes In the Elves’ Characters

Amazon Studios

Fans of any much-loved work of fiction very rarely have a unanimous opinion when it comes to any screen adaptation. With The Rings of Power coming decades after Peter Jackson brought the definitive version of Tolkien’s core tale of Middle Earth to cinemas, the comparisons between the two were always going to draw very polarized opinions on social media. Whether it is complaints about Galadriel’s warrior persona or Elrond’s easy-going attitude, there has been plenty of criticism for the show’s opening episodes.

However, that hasn’t stopped the series pulling in high praise or massive viewing figures, and with season 2 seemingly already on its way into production soon that is good news for Amazon. The series is currently holding a strong critic rating, while a continuous wave of mostly incoherent and nonsensical 1 star reviews have seen the audience score drop to 39%. However, as has been proven time and time again, that doesn’t seem to matter when it comes to the popularity or success of any show or movie. With more seasons already set at Amazon, it will take more than some disgruntled fans to stop this epic series playing out as planned.
