Disney have hit back at The Mandalorian star Gina Carano’s lawsuit, which focuses on her firing from the Star Wars series. In a new filing made on Tuesday night, the studio looked to dismiss the wrongful discharge and sex discrimination case by stating that Carano’s job was made untenable when the “final straw” came as she used social media to “trivialize the Holocaust.”

The new filing seeks to have the case thrown out of court, with a hearing on June 12 being requested by Disney’s representative Daniel Petrocelli. The Elon Musk-financed legal case is based on Carano’s belief that her “words were consistently twisted to demonize & dehumanize” her. While Canaro is looking for both damages and to be reinstated in her role as Cara Dune in the sci-fi franchise, Disney, and fellow defendants Lucasfilm and Huckleberry Industries have shown no sign of entertaining either of those options. The filing states:
Carano’s social-media usage sunk to its nadir on February 10, 2021. On that day, she reposted an Instagram post from user warriorpriestgympodcast. The post read: “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. ‘Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?’”
Disney had enough. The same day Carano grotesquely trivialized the Holocaust as comparable to sharp political disagreements, Lucasfilm announced that “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” A month later, Disney’s former CEO explained that Carano’s views “didn’t align with Company values,” including its “values of respect, values of decency, values of integrity, and values of inclusion.”
The Mandalorian is Moving Forward Without Carano
Disney
As was always expected, The Mandalorian has now moved on from any storylines planned for Carano’s Cara Dune, including those that would have seen the former MMA-fighter potentially leading her own series.
With the recent seasons of the Pedro Pascal-led show forging ahead undeterred by the potential lawsuit that is now in motion, the potential fourth season is now seemingly on hiatus to make way for the Jon Favreau-directed movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu. This is one of several new movies coming to the franchise, and while details are scarce, film will be a pivotal step towards the conclusion of this era of Star Wars storytelling.
Related The Mandalorian & Grogu Reportedly Has Only a Fraction of Rise of Skywalker’s Budget The Mandalorian & Grogu will allegedly be made on a much smaller budget than any other recent Star Wars movie.
Based on Disney’s statement, regardless of whether Carano’s claim makes it to court or not, there is no chance that she will be making a return to any Disney-backed projects in the foreseeable future. Based on the sensitive nature of the actress’s comments, in a time when freedom of speech and what opinions are and are not acceptable in modern society is a topic under constant scrutiny, the outcome of Disney’s filing could potentially have ramifications across the industry.
