It’s official, the Emmy-nominated Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, based on the Eisner-winning comic by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, is returning for season three, with ten all-new episodes starring the Hargreeves family. The new season is set to premiere in early 2022, although we don’t have a specific release date yet. The setting for the next installment was also revealed as the name of Way’s third Umbrella Academy comic book, Hotel Oblivion: where the Hargreeves can check in, but they can never leave.

Min (Ben), and Aidan Gallagher (Number Five) are all confirmed to be returning for season three. Also returning, Ritu Arya as Lila and Colm Feore as Sir Reginald Hargreeves. The Umbrella Academy is set in a world where an eccentric billionaire like Sir Reginald Hargreeves can adopt seven children, put them to work fighting crime, and no one blinks an eye. In the first season, set in present day, the surviving Hargreeves children must dust-off their superhero masks and reconnect to stop a global apocalypse. But failing to stop the first global apocalypse, the second season picks up immediately after the first so that the siblings can travel back in time to stop an entirely different world-ending event. Then, The Umbrella Academy season two ends by introducing a new group of superpowered individuals, the Sparrow Academy, formed by a still-alive Reginald in an alternative universe… Yes, it’s complicated.
Netflix recently held its inaugural TUDUM: A Netflix Global Fan Event on September 25th, 2021, with more than 145 of the production company’s biggest stars, including the cast of The Umbrella Academy, giving fans an opportunity to ask and answer some “burning questions” about the show’s return in 2022. Page, who came out as transgender earlier this year, was the first to speak to the camera, once again confirming Vanya’s return to the series. After some fans were worried that the actor wouldn’t have the opportunity to return to his role, he was subsequently confirmed as Vanya in the third season of the Netflix series, and he thanked the show’s fans for being “the absolute best fans in the world,” adding that filming season three was ”incredibly fun.”
During the event, the cast also revealed that it was also a surprise to them when Ben returned at the end of season two, with Page saying, “We didn’t know all the details so the surprise about Ben at the end was a surprise for us.” As fans of The Umbrella Academy already know, the Hargreeves siblings, except for Klaus, couldn’t see Ben for most of the first two seasons. In the third season, however, there is a Ben that is alive and crime fighting. Raver-Lampman joked that it was nice to finally look at her co-star while on set, saying, “It was really nice to be able to actually look at Justin H. Min in the face for the first time in two years.”
Hopper added that in the final scene when fans see an alive, alternate version of Ben, the cast was as confused as the fans were about the introduction of The Sparrow Academy, saying that at the time, they were just “silhouettes” because the actors were yet to be cast.
To that end, Min will return in season three as Sparrow #2, described as a “Machiavellian tactician.” The other Sparrows include Justin Cornwell (Marcus), Britne Oldford (Fei), Genesis Rodriguez (Sloane), Jake Epstein (Designated Survivor), Cazzie David (Jayme), and the Dread-Inducing Psykronium Cube (Christopher).
