The Walking Dead Final Season Teaser Trailer Announces August Premiere Date

The beginning of the end for The Walking Dead is officially set for this summer. AMC has announced that season 11 of the long-running zombie show will debut this August. It had previously been revealed that this will be the final season of the show, which is based on Robert Kirkman’s Image Comics series of the same name. Mark your calendars fans, as the season premiere is set for August 22.

AMC made the reveal in a brief teaser trailer that made its way online following The Walking Dead season 10 finale. The network extended the most recent season by six episodes, which began airing earlier this year. Negan’s episode brought season 10 to a close and the teaser, which doesn’t give away too much, revealed when we can expect to return to the walker-filled wasteland. Angela Kang, showrunner and executive producer of the series, had this to say in a statement.

“Coming off of the six additional episodes for Season 10, which focused on smaller, character-driven stories, we’re excited to kick off Season 11 bigger than ever. The stakes will be high, we’ll see more zombies, tons of action, intriguing new stories, never-before-seen locations and our groups together in one community for the first time, trying to rebuild what the Whisperers took from them.”

The Walking Dead season 11 will be expanded as well, totaling 24 episodes. The first arc will consist of eight episodes. For now, the network is playing things close to the chest, in terms of where the story is headed, as this teaser is just a teaser in the truest sense of the word. Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer of TWD Universe, had this to say.

“The final chapter of The Walking Dead begins with eight action-packed episodes that will feature the massive scope and scale fans have come to expect from TWD Universe, and I’m thrilled to share that fans won’t have to wait long for these incredible new episodes to debut this summer.”

While the main show is ending, the franchise is far from done. Two spin-offs are currently in development, including once centered on Carol and Daryl, as well as an anthology series titled Tales of The Walking Dead. Additionally, Scott M. Gimple has teased a possible comedy series set within this universe. Meanwhile, Fear the Walking Dead season 7 has been given the green light and The Walking Dead: World Beyond still has one season left. And let us not forget the Rick Grimes movies, which will bring back Andrew Lincoln for a series of feature-length adventures.

Despite steep ratings declines in recent years, The Walking Dead remains one of the most-watched shows on all of cable. Hence, AMC is developing a full-on universe of projects. Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, Greg Nicotero, Joseph Incaprera and Denise Huth also serve as executive producers. The Walking Dead season 11 arrives on August 22.
