The Wheel of Time Trailer Brings the Fantasy Epic to Amazon This Thanksgiving

Amazon has debuted the first official trailer for The Wheel of Time, their upcoming fantasy adevnture which is an adaptation of the novel series from the late author Robert Jordan. The 14-book collection will be brought to life when this long-awaited show finally debuts on Nov. 19th. You can finally get a first look with this premiere footage.

The trailer showcases the basic elements of The Wheel of Time, mainly focusing on Rosamund Pike’s character, Moiraine Damodred, the member of a female sorcerers group known as the Aes Sedai. The Aes Sedai are capable of wielding the One Power, allowing them to heal others and control the elements. Also shown is Daniel Henney’s al’Lan Mandragoran, Moiraine’s bodyguard. Fans are excited to see the two fight side by side.

Rosamund Pike is the only A-list actress attached to this project with the rest being young, fresh faces. The remaining ensemble includes Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, and Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon. These are the five central characters who will end up being mentored by Moiraine.

There are plenty of other recognizable things from the books for fans to enjoy, such as Shadar Logoth, a cursed city of shadow; the White Tower of Tar Valon, and the show’s version of the Myrddraal and Trollocs, who will oppose Moiraine’s group.

The official synopsis for The Wheel of Time reads: “Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine, a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.”

The Wheel of Time has had some difficulty in production. The series was announced in 2018, but production halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon appears to have a significant amount of confidence in the series as Season 2 is already in production.

According to The Verge, Amazon isn’t technically the first studio to attempt an adaptation of this book series. In 2015, The Wheel of Time: Winter Dragon aired on FXX as a half-hour pilot. This pilot had been reportedly “secretly produced and aired in the dead of night as an attempt to prevent the adaptation rights for the series from reverting back to Jordan’s estate.”

The Wheel of Time is Amazon’s first attempt at beginning their own Game of Thrones type fantasy series, however, it will not be their last. Amazon is currently producing a Lord of the Rings prequel series which is set to debut on Sept. 2nd, 2022. Fans will surely catch many of the elements from the book in the trailer as they are all over. The Wheel of Time will be airing weekly, similar to the release schedule for other Amazon Prime hits like The Boys and Invincible, until its finale on Dec. 24th.
