Clark Kent actor Tom Welling recently provided new details regarding the upcoming Smallville animated series. The information about the update was first reported by Screen Rant. While showing up alongside co-star and Lois Lane actress Erica Durance at Fan Expo Vancouver, Welling discussed his desires for the project. A major portion of his comments related to his wish for the cast of the original show to return for the animated version.
When talking about his hope for the cast to come back, Welling said, “We’re working on an animated series that picks up right after our Smallville [season 10], and, again, telling our own story and our vision is that we get Erica… it might be tough to get Allison [Mack]… But even Sam Jones III and Lionel Luthor is going to be a big part of that. John Glover wants to do it, we’ve already been into this. We’ve already gotten animation, we just don’t have the stories yet because Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar] are busy doing Tim Burton-like movies.”

Welling added, “As soon as they are done with that, we’re going to do this. I want to be Clark’s voice, I want Erica to be Lois’ voice, that’s going to be the fun of it. I think there’s a story that Al and Miles are going to tell that’s individual and new and call it a Multiverse thing. But let’s see where it goes, and it’ll be fun.”
Many of the actors, such as Welling, Durance, and Sam Jones III have the potential to appear in the show. Due to her alleged leadership role in the NXIVM cult, Allison Mack is unlikely to return to the Smallville universe.

Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum Really Want the Cartoon Series to Happen
DC Comics
Back in May, Welling and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum expressed their hopes for a Smallville animated series to be created. Smallville focused on Superman during his younger years. The live action project debuted in 2001 and ran for ten seasons. An animated sequel series would not be the first time fans have seen the characters since the original show’s finale. A comic book titled Smallville: Season 11 began in 2012, one year after the last episode. Additionally, Welling and Durance came back to their roles in the Crisis on Infinite Earths tv crossover. In the special, Clark Kent and Lois Lane were revealed to have gotten married and started a family. Another reveal was that Kent had given up his powers to be closer to his loved ones. It is unknown whether Welling would gain his powers in an animated show.
A Smallville animated show would not be the first instance of DC actors playing the same characters in both live-action and cartoon form. Stars of the 1960s Batman series later appeared in two animated films, one 2016 and the other in 2017. Adam West came back to play Batman. Burt Ward returned to his Robin performance. Julie Newmar appeared as Catwoman in the animated projects. Fans who grew up in the 2000s watching Welling as Superman would probably like to see the actor return in some way, along with the original’s supporting cast.
Smallville is currently streaming on Hulu.
