Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega Wins Best Performance in a Show at MTV Movie & TV Awards

The fans have spoken and Jenna Ortega has won the award for Best Performance in a Show at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Ortega won the role for playing the titular Addams Family favorite in Wednesday, the Netflix series that has garnered immensely high viewership along with widespread praise. Ortega may have been the favorite heading into the event, given her popularity, and it was not the surprise of the century to see the Wednesday star picking up this win.

With that said, the other nominees were solid and would have been just as deserving of getting the award. They included Aubrey Plaza for The White Lotus, Christina Ricci for Yellowjackets, Riley Keough for Daisy Jones & the Six, Sadie Sink for Stranger Things, and Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the Building.

Ortega’s win was the only win for Wednesday at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, though it picked up an additional four nominations. Ortega and Thing actor Victor Dorobantu were up for Best Duo, which went to Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal for The Last of Us. Ortega had another solo nomination for Best Hero, and that went to Pedro Pascal for The Last of Us. Wednesday was also up for Best Show, which also was awarded to The Last of Us. The iconic dance scene was recognized as well, as the “Goo Goo Muck” dance scene from Wednesday was nominated for Best Musical Moment, an award that went to “Come Back Home” for Purple Hearts.

Wednesday Won Jenna Ortega Her Second MTV Movie & TV Award

The win also marks the second award earned at the MTV Movie & TV Awards for Jenna Ortega. Last year, she won for Most Frightened Performance with her role in the fifth Scream movie; the sequel Scream VI, which also features Ortega, won this year’s Best Movie award. Ortega was also nominated for her role in Wednesday at the Golden Globes, and she won Best Actress in a Horror Series for the part earlier this year at the Critics’ Choice Super Awards.

We also know there’s more to come of Ortega as Wednesday Addams. Given the incredible success of the first season, a second season was ordered and is in development, though cameras haven’t started rolling just yet. A big part of that success could certainly be attributed to the casting, as the fans have loved Ortega in the role. Director and executive producer Tim Burton said that the show wouldn’t have stood a chance without Ortega’s casting.

“No matter how good the writing was, without the right Wednesday, the show wouldn’t really exist,” he said, per NetflixQueue. “I can’t imagine any other Wednesday. She’s like a silent movie actress in the sense that she’s able to convey things without words.”

You can stream the first season of Wednesday on Netflix. Season 2 doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
