Woke Gets Canceled at Hulu After Two Seasons

The Hulu sitcom Woke is over. Per Deadline, Hulu has officially canceled Woke after two seasons on the streaming service. This news follows season 2 arriving in its entirety in April, leaving the future of the sitcom on the bubble with no word of a renewal since. The series originally premiered on Hulu in September 2020, both seasons each featuring eight episodes. No season 3 is in the works which means that season 2’s finale will now serve as the series finale as well.

Woke was created by Keith Knight and Marshall Todd. It followed Lamorne Morris as Keef Knight, a cartoonist who intentionally shies away from controversial topics with his work until his perspective completely changes folowing an altercation with police. Now able to see and hear inanimate objects taking to him, Keef must navigate his new life as a “woke” Black man.

Smoove, Nicole Byer, Eddie Griffin, Cree Summer, Tony Hale, Sam Richardson, Jack McBrayer, Cedric the Entertainer, and Keith David. Knight and Todd executive produced with Jay Dyer, Maurice Marabe, Will Gluck, Richie Schwartz, Eric Christian Olsen, Kate Schumaecker, and Anthony King.

Woke Gained Popularity With Season 2, But Not Enough for a Renewal

Hulu

Before the cancelation, Morris spoke about how the show seemed to have grown in popularity with the release of season 2. The new season had brought some new viewers to the series who’d gone back and watched season 1 once they were made aware of the show. It brought a lot of conversation to the series which was certainly a good thing for Morris and the Woke team.

“I think the cool thing about it is that folks are becoming aware of the show more,” Morris told E! News. “A lot of folks are going back to watch the first season, which is just awesome. People who didn’t know it existed are now talking about it.”

Of Keef’s direction in season 2, Morris added, “That is the age old question with anything that we do. ‘What are you going do now?’ You know, sometimes you have this goal, you have these aspirations, and then you get there and you go, ‘Is this it? Or am I supposed to do more with it?’ I think there’s always a social responsibility. With him, that is his primary focus. Does he know how to do it? Does he know what he’s talking about? A lot of times with folks, the answer is no.”

“With Keef, that could be the answer, too,” Morse also explained. “You don’t have to have it all figured out. A lot of times folks think they do. People love to be social justice warriors.”

You can watch both seasons of Woke on Hulu, just don’t get too excited to see a third season on the streamer.
