Yellowstone’s latest prequel is making a change, switching the title from 1932 to 1923, according to reports from TheWrap. The near-decade change should be significant for the series, which is near the end of World War I (1918), and the beginning of Prohibition (1920).
The new logline for the series describes 1923 as focusing on the Dutton Family’s next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled beneath the cloud of Montana’s great depression, which preceded the nation by almost a decade. The series will also touch on the end of World War I, which occurred five years prior. The show will follow up on another Yellowstone prequel, 1883. The initial prequel followed the Dutton family as they embarked on a journey west, settling in Montana.

As previously reported, 1923 will feature at least two Hollywood A-list actors, with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren starring in the series. Taylor Sheridan, creator of the Yellowstone franchise, is also the mind behind the new prequel. Joining Sheridan as executive producer on the show are John Linson, Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, and Ben Richardson.
How Will 1923 Differ From Previous Entries to the Franchise?
Paramount
With Yellowstone, audiences got a look into the life of modern cowboys and the struggle to keep land from massive corporations and Native American reservations to which the land initially belonged to. Politicians are frequently bought and sold by the world’s largest oil and lumber companies, and John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, is willing to do whatever it takes to preserve his home.
1883 provided a different perspective on the world of cowboys following the post-civil war Dutton family. The group travels from Tennessee to Fort Worth, Texas, joining a European immigrant wagon train undertaking the journey west to Oregon. Eventually, the Duttons were bound to establish their ranch in Montana, which would ultimately come to be known as the Yellowstone.

With 1923 jumping 40 years in the future from the previous prequel, we will have to wait and see what makes the series worth the watch and how it expands upon the Dutton family’s history. There certainly will be an abundance of issues to tackle, as mentioned in the logline above; however, it’s up to Sheridan to ensure the series has a proper place within the Yellowstone franchise.
1923 is expected to stream on Paramount+ in December this year.
