Ironically, considering it’s a heist movie about stealing to get rich, this hit $100k action blockbuster proves that money isn’t everything (at least, in terms of making a great action movie). As Hollywood studios scramble together hundreds of millions of dollars to produce yet another entry in a dying franchise, only for it to be slated by critics (here’s looking at you, Fast & Furious), a group of independent filmmakers produced one of the best and most underrated action movies of the year on a fraction of the budget. We’ll forgive you for never having heard of Hierarchy. But, as it’s currently dominating on streaming, you no longer have an excuse not to watch it.
Hierarchy is currently streaming on Starz, and the low-budget action film is shooting up the streaming charts. Since debuting on the streamer earlier this year, Hierarchy has held a place on the Starz weekly streaming chart. At the time of writing, it is the tenth most popular movie on the platform, with Michael Jai White’s Hostile Takeover in the top spot. Not to be confused with the K Drama of the same name, Hierarchy was directed by Russull K Reed and written by Chiderah Uzowulu, who also stars in the movie. Uzowulu plays Stone, who, with his brother Reach (Xavier Alvarado), plans to execute the most dangerous heist of their lives. The official synopsis reads:
“As adopted brothers Stone and Reach prepare for the biggest and most dangerous heist of their lives, they find themselves caught in a high-stakes game of survival. A relentless foreign mafia, seeking to settle scores, hunts them down, while unresolved family tensions from their past threaten to unravel their plans. Meanwhile, a determined police force is closing in, intent on bringing them to justice, turning their ambitious job into a race against time.”
As well as having a marginal budget of most Hollywood action movies, Hierarchy was out of reach of most critics and, as a result, it doesn’t have a Rotten Tomatoes score. IMDb users have given the film an average score of 4.3. But don’t listen to those. The few viewers who reviewed the film on Rotten Tomatoes have heaped praise on the $100k iteration of Michael Mann’s Heat.
Big Screen Explosions On a Low Budget

When you hear “$100k action movie,” you probably think of a terrible student film with crappy one-liners and terrible CGI explosions. But, despite its marginal budget, Hierarchy is the real deal. The trailer alone should be enough to sell you on the non-stop action. But if that’s not enough, here’s what audiences had to say about the film.
“This is the best crime-thriller-drama I’ve seen in 30 years,” wrote one user, who directly compared the film to Heat. Another noted the film’s small budget, writing, “Phenomenal story, great acting from the entire cast, and done under $100k budget.” Those who rated the film highly on IMDb wrote similar praise. “This movie doesn’t let up for a second. The action hits hard, the pacing’s tight, and every scene feels like it actually matters. No filler, no cheesy lines – just pure energy.” It might not have the budget, the marketing, or the star power of a Hollywood action film, but don’t sleep on Hierarchy while it’s streaming on Starz.
