Making its Prime Video debut on November 14, 2024, Cross is a popular crime series that has remained atop the platform’s most-watched shows. Based on the fictional Washington, D.C. detective featured in 30 Alex Cross novels by James Patterson, the eight-part series has drawn plaudits for its towering performance by Aldis Hodge as the title character. The show’s critical success and wide viewership led Amazon to renew the series for Season 2.
Of course, discussing Cross Season 2 without clarifying what transpires at the end of Season 1 is impossible. Core to Cross’ investigative focus is identifying who murdered his wife, Maria. Meanwhile, the mysterious murder of a political activist occupies Cross’ work duties, with the shocking confluence of events in the Season 1 finale setting up Season 2’s storyline. Cross is an American TV crime thriller series created by Ben Watkins for Amazon Prime Video. Although the character is based on James Patterson’s long-running fictional protagonist, the TV show tracks a new crime to solve. Aldis Hodge portrays Alex Cross, an obsessive forensic psychologist whose M.O. is to get inside the minds of killers to understand their motives, anticipate their next move, and prevent them from committing more crimes.
Reeling from the brutal murder of his wife, Maria (Chaunteé Schuler Irving), Cross begins investigating the murder of Emir Goodspeed (Donovan Brown), a Black Lives Matter and Defund the Police activist in Washington, D.C. Cross attends therapy to deal with his grief, which begins to affect his work negatively. Leaning on his best friend and detective partner John Sampson (Isaiah Mustafa) and his grandmother Regina (Juanita Jennings), Cross tries to keep his emotions in check while caring for his two young children, Damon (Caleb Elijah) and Janelle (Melody Hurd).
As Cross investigates Emir’s murder, he encounters several potential suspects in D.C., including wealthy D.C. lobbyist Ed Ramsey (Ryan Eggold), Ed’s romantic interest Shannon Witmer (Eloise Mumford), former police detective Bobby Trey (Johnny Ray Gill), and more. With Maria and Emir’s murders to solve, Cross turns to FBI Agent Kayla Craig (Alona Tal), Chief Anderson (Jennifer Wigmore), and criminal journalist Tania Hightower (Siobhan Murphy) as the season finale comes into sharper focus.

Cross makes headway into the murder cases in Episode 4, “Masks.” As Cross tails Ed, he suspects that he is a serial killer targeting Shannon Witmer as his next victim, whom Ed met and manipulated on a dating app. More disturbing, Cross finds a scrapbook in Ed’s home idolizing serial killers and illustrating deaths identical to those occurring in D.C. Cross discovers that the serial killer intends to murder 12 victims, with 11 already completed and Shannon the next in line.
Cross ultimately prevents Ed from killing Shannon and completing his psychotic goal of claiming 12 lives, prompting Ed to turn his murderous sights on Cross. Just as Ed prepares to kill Shannon, Cross arrives in the nick of time and saves her life. Cross and Sampson burn Ed’s macabre scrapbook and arrest him for the 11 murders committed in D.C, including Emir Goodspeed. While Ramsey is put away, Cross encounters more danger relating to his wife Maria’s death.
But It Doesn’t End There
During a crucial flashback, it is revealed that Cross has been targeted for revenge by a disgruntled prisoner. Cross once arrested a woman named Dierdre Nolan, who was given a life sentence after murdering an innocent victim. Cross was the key witness testifying that Nolan had a “psychopathic personality” and was unfit to reenter society. While in jail, Nolan was abused so badly that she took her own life.

Cross investigates Nolan’s death and learns she had ties with a man named Peter Lenox (Ryan Allen) and someone called “Street Mother.” Further investigation reveals that “Street Mother” is Miss Nancy (Karen Robinson), the piano teacher for Alex and Maria Cross’ son, Damon. Along with Peter Lenox, Miss Nancy murdered Maria Cross to avenge Nolan’s death, which they blame Alex Cross for. Peter (Nolan’s lover) and Nancy (Nolan and Lenox’s fairy godmother) have been stalking the Cross family with murderous intentions, with the latter posing as Damon’s piano teacher to gain easy access to their home.
Miss Nancy takes Cross’ children to her secluded cabin, where Peter shoots John. When the two killers force Cross to kill his children, John arrives and they bludgeon Peter. As Regina recovers from her injuries inflicted by Peter, who attacked her in Cross’ home, the criminal cases come to a close. Peter is arrested for killing Maria and Miss Nancy burns herself alive before being caught. Cross rescues his children and lover Elle (Samantha Walkes) in time. However, one more shocking plot twist involving Ed’s associate Bobby Trey sets up Season 2.
Cross’ Season 1 Ending Sets Up Season 2

Former police officer Bobby Trey is revealed to be Ed Ramsey’s key accomplice who helped the serial killer tally 11 bodies, offering him $1 million for his services. Once Ed gets arrested, FBI Agent Kayla Craig attempts to get Bobby to confess to the murders to give the victims’ families closure in the 2024 TV crime thriller.
Painted publicly as America’s Most Wanted Fanboy Killer, Bobby agrees to save himself by offering evidence linking Ed to six D.C. murder victims. In exchange, Bobby is given full criminal immunity and his jail sentence is reduced to two years. Kayla agrees to pay Bobby for taking the fall as the Fanboy Killer. The implication moving forward is that Cross must deal with Bobby and Kayla’s criminal ulterior motives in Season 2, which includes exposing the D.C. power players linked to Ed.

The small screen is no stranger to adapting some of the literary world’s most acclaimed novels, with James Patterson’s Alex Cross being the next hit.
Cross Season 2 has already been filmed, according to showrunner Ben Watkins (via Collider), who teases:
“Season 2 is actually filmed. I’m gonna go ahead and give you a spoiler because, f*** it. We started the [writers’] room back in November, we started filming in April, we finished production in September, and we’re actually in post-production on Season 2. Each season is a book for me. They’re all based on new mysteries. Season 1 is

and Season 2 is called
Bitter Fruit
.”
Although Watkins promises “new mysteries” in Season 2’s “Bitter Fruit,” fans can expect Cross to encounter Bobby Trey and Kayla Craig in some capacity when the series returns.
