A Dahmer production assistant says the Netflix series is one of the “worst shows that I’ve ever worked on.”

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has drawn a lot of viewers on Netflix, but with its success has come plenty of controversies. The series has been criticized by some for its macabre content with some viewers unable to make it past the very first episode. Labeling the series as “LGBTQ” content had also gotten Netflix into some water, leading to the tag’s removal. Some family members of Dahmer victim Errol Lindsey have also expressed their disapproval of the Netflix hit.
The trouble with Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story also extends behind the scenes. Just ahead of the debut of the series on Netflix, production coordinator Kim Alsup posted a message to Twitter alleging mistreatment she endured on the set. Alsup said that this included getting frequently mistaken for the only other Black woman working on the show.

“They kept calling me her name. We both had braids, she was dark skin and 5’10. I’m 5’5,” Alsup said. “Working on this took everything I had as I was treated horribly. I look at the Black female lead differently now too.”

The Trailer Alone Was Hard to Watch for Kim Alsup

Alsup has spoken out more about her experience working on Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in an interview with the L.A. Times. She says she hasn’t been able to watch the series since it debuted as it would probably bring back unhappy memories of the unpleasant production. Alsup did happen to catch the trailer which she says was enough to give her PTSD, leading to the above tweet that went viral.
“I just feel like it’s going to bring back too many memories of working on it,” Alsup says. “I don’t want to have these PTSD types of situations. The trailer itself gave me PTSD, which is why I ended up writing that tweet and I didn’t think that anybody was going to read.”
Alsup added, “It was one of the worst shows that I’ve ever worked on. I was always being called someone else’s name, the only other Black girl who looked nothing like me, and I learned the names for 300 background extras.”
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which stars Niecy Nash and Evan Peters, is streaming on Netflix.
