With The Night Agent gearing up for its second season, which is slated to hit Netflix later this month, the show has found itself back on the platform’s Top 10 list. The action thriller series follows a low-level FBI agent, Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), whose only job is to answer a phone in the basement of the White House should it ever ring. However, it never does, at least until now. When former tech CEO Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) is instructed to call a mysterious number at the behest of her aunt and uncle, Peter answers. The pair are subsequently pulled into the middle of a vast conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the top of America’s government.
Wildly popular from the moment it arrived on Netflix, the show became the third-most-viewed debut series on the platform and the sixth-most-viewed show within a month. Shortly after its premiere, The Night Agent was renewed for a second season and has already been renewed for a third ahead of its Season 2 release. Clearly a fun and thrilling series to watch, fans of the show need to check out another conspiracy thriller, Bodyguard, which happens to star a notable Game of Thrones actor.

Also streaming on Netflix, the six-part limited series was originally created for the BBC. Without a doubt, fans of The Night Agent will definitely find it worth watching. Given the series is set across the pond, some of the lingo and political dynamics might take a minute for viewers to grasp. However, that shouldn’t deter viewers, seeing as it’s short-lived and doesn’t take away from the overall experience of the show. If anything, it makes the series that much more intriguing.
Starring Richard Madden, who is well known for his role as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, Bodyguard follows David Budd, a dedicated police sergeant in the Royalty and Specialist Protection branch. At the beginning of the series, David is assigned as the Principal Protection Officer (PPO) to Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), the country’s home secretary, who happens to be a particularly controversial and ambitious politician. With various enemies mounting against her by the day, David’s role as her bodyguard is vitally important, more so now than ever. However, his patriotic loyalties are put to the test when he’s asked to report on her actions.

As a war veteran with PTSD, David is generally mistrustful of politicians. To make matters worse, his volatility makes him particularly vulnerable to corruption, or at least that’s what the people pulling the strings want everyone to believe. David’s personal politics might not align with Julia’s, but whether he’d allow such a fact to affect his duties as her bodyguard remains to be seen. With his personal life essentially in shambles as a result of the trauma he refuses to deal with, it makes sense that David would find himself in the middle of a countrywide conspiracy involving his new assignment.
How Are ‘The Night Agent’ and ‘Bodyguard’ Similar?
Each series involves extensive conspiracies at the highest levels of government. However, Bodyguard has a much darker tone than The Night Agent and delves into more serious topics such as PTSD and suicide. Sure, Peter deals with the shadow of his father’s mistakes, but he remains essentially unscathed by his past. He’s also still hopeful about his future. David, on the other hand, is an extremely tortured individual. Because of what he experienced during his deployment, he struggles to simply exist every day. He cares about his wife and children, but he doesn’t have the kind of life with them that he wants, which is in large part due to his unresolved PTSD.

While The Night Agent tells a broader, entertaining story of conspiracy, Bodyguard has a more nuanced and elevated narrative. That isn’t to say the series is beyond the scope of any viewer or talks down to its audience. Instead, it tackles the topic of conspiracy through a much more serious lens. There’s a lighter feel to The Night Agent, but the same cannot be said for Bodyguard. While the former is a fun thriller, the latter is more of a heart-pounding, and at times anxiety-inducing, thriller. That being said, it’s worth watching, particularly for fans of the political conspiracy genre.
There’s no denying Bodyguard is a fantastic show. In 2019, it was nominated for two Golden Globes, including Best Television Series – Drama and Best Actor – Television Series Drama, which Madden actually won. While awards certainly aren’t everything, Bodyguard’s nominations are indicative of its appeal to potential viewers. For those who thoroughly enjoyed The Night Agent, Bodyguard should be the next series they dive into. The Night Agent and Bodyguard are currently streaming on Netflix.
