While the U.S. version of The Office has been off the air for 12 years, that does not mean the beloved sitcom is no longer being represented on television. Earlier this year, Peacock released a spin-off to generally positive reviews from critics and fans, with only one actor from the original series returning to the same role. However, one fan-favorite from The Office is more than open to making their grand return to the iconic sitcom franchise.
MovieWeb talked to Craig Robinson on the In Your Dreams blue carpet about potentially reprising his role as Darryl Philbin from The Office in the streaming spin-off The Paper. When asked if there was any chance that fans would see his return in the Peacock series, Robinson replied, “Call Greg Daniels. I’ll be there in a heartbeat.” While it does not seem like talks between the mentioned parties have begun just yet, Robinson’s positive response is indicative that the future of The Paper could very well see more actors from The Office return as guest stars.
As fans of The Paper know, the only character to return from The Office is Oscar Martinez, played by Oscar Nuñez. However, he is no longer with Dunder Mifflin, as the Scranton Branch was revealed to have shut down in the first episode of the spin-off. Oscar now forms part of the titular struggling publication that includes a host of new characters, led by Domhnall Gleeson as Ned Sampson. It is unclear how Darryl could fit into the picture, but if Greg Daniels and company can figure out a way to make it happen, fans would surely embrace it with open arms.
What Is ‘The Paper’ About?
NBC
The Paper follows the same documentary crew from The Office moving to a new location, instead focusing on a struggling publication as its latest subject. Created by Greg Daniels (The Office) and Michael Koman (Nathan for You), The Paper is able to recapture the mockumentary tone while introducing a whole cast of new characters, most of which feel radically different from The Office’s crew. Read the official synopsis:
The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch in the Emmy Award-winning series “The Office” find a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it.
The official cast includes Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina, About Time), Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus), Chelsea Frei (Poker Face), Melvin Gregg (American Vandal), Gbemisola Ikumelo (A League Of Their Own), Alex Edelman (Just For Us, Unfrosted), Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), Tim Key (The Witchfinder), and Oscar Nuñez (The Office). Ahead of the show’s debut on streaming, Peacock renewed the sitcom for Season 2 earlier this year.
