Even if you haven’t watched O Brother, Where Art Thou?, you’ve almost definitely had one of its songs stuck in your head at some point. Released in 2000, the Coen Brothers’ bluegrass take on Homer’s The Odyssey is a fan favorite among their impressive filmography. But the film is arguably more memorable for its soundtrack than anything else, which won countless awards following the movie’s release. However you remember O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the film is making a well-deserved comeback on the streaming charts, 25 years after its release.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? is currently streaming on Hulu, and subscribers are obsessed with one of the Coen Brothers’ best. The movie is the fourth most popular film on the platform this week. Directed by Joel Coen, who penned the screenplay with his brother Ethan, the film stars George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson as the men of constant sorrow. After escaping from a chain gang, the three convicts travel across the state to retrieve treasure that they buried before they were caught. On the trip, they encounter a musician who sold his soul to the devil, singing sirens, the embodiment of a cyclops, and a past love. The official synopsis reads:
“Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney) is having difficulty adjusting to his hard-labor sentence in Mississippi. He scams his way off the chain gang with simple Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) and maladjusted Pete (John Turturro), then the trio sets out to pursue freedom and the promise of a fortune in buried treasure. With nothing to lose and still in shackles, their hasty run takes them on an incredible journey of awesome experiences and colorful characters.”
O Brother, Where Art Thou? was a critical success when it opened in 2000. It might not have the same fame as the Coens’ other masterpieces, like No Country for Old Men and Fargo, but it is still a fan favorite, holding an 89% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics were slightly harsher about the film, but only slightly, as it holds a 78% critics’ rating. O Brother performed modestly at the box office, earning over $71 million worldwide. But its soundtrack performed far better. O Brother, Where Art Thou?’s official soundtrack won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002, and went 8x Platinum, selling over 10 million copies worldwide.
‘The Odyssey’ Is Getting Yet Another Remake

If you’ve ventured anywhere near the movie-loving side of the internet over the past year, you probably already know that Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, will be getting yet another adaptation. The Coens might have heavily altered the story to make it fit 1930s Mississippi, but Christopher Nolan is next up to bat, and his version is likely to be far more faithful.
For starters, Nolan’s The Odyssey has kept the poem’s title and its setting of the Trojan War. As he so often does, Christopher Nolan has assembled an all-star cast for the project, including Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Ryan Hurst, and so many more. Nolan’s version of The Odyssey is currently slated for release on July 17, 2026.
