There are some movies that go unnoticed for a long while, only to suddenly see a surge of interest from nowhere. The latest to join that line-up is The Last Stand of Ellen Cole, an action Western
that is clearly picking up some of Taylor Sheridan’s crowd as it has topped the Paramount+ global movie chart despite being completely unheard of for more than six months following its release in October 2024.
The Last Stand of Ellen Cole stars horror regular Lin Shaye
, probably best known for her appearances in the Insidious franchise among others, as a “harmless” 80-year-old woman being bullied out of her home by contractors wanting the land she lives on. However, bullets fly and bodies pile up when it turns out she is not the helpless little old lady she appeared to be. The full synopsis reads:
“When an evil contractor goes to extreme measures to evict a testy tenant who is standing in the way of his new project, he fails to take into account that this seemingly harmless old woman is a trained killer and will do anything to protect her beloved home.”

Is The Last Stand of Ellen Cole worth a watch? Well, that is a question that is hard to answer as the film has virtually no presence on any movie review site, other than a smattering of reviews on Letterbox’d and one on The Movie Database. And it may not be easy to find, depending on where you live, as it has not been released on all Paramount+ sites. So, perhaps it will scratch that neo-Western itch that so many people are constantly looking to scratch these days if you can find it, or maybe it will just have you running to rewatch Yellowstone for the fifth time.

It is hard to log onto Paramount+ these days without tripping over a modern Western-themed show from the pen of Taylor Sheridan, and that has led to a rise in interest in the genre that seemed to have hit its heights several decades ago. But the question is, what do you do when you have exhausted Sheridan’s back catalog? Go looking for something that looks vaguely Western-ish that you have never heard of, obviously.
That certainly seems to be the case with The Last Stand of Ellen Cole. The movie was originally released in October 2024 with no fanfare, and seemingly no attention from anyone. No critics have reviewed it on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences seem unaware of its existence, and it looked destined to be a movie lost to the world among the endless church of content.
Now it has jumped above the likes of Gladiator II on the global charts, but depending on where you live in the world, you may still have to wait a little longer to see it, as it is not streaming in all territories. However, even if you cannot find it where you live, it is one to keep in your back pocket for another time, and while you wait, Mr. Sheridan will have plenty of stories of gunfights, fistfights and power-grabs to keep you going.
