This Max Series Corrects the Inaccuracies of ‘The Iron Claw’

As we’ve seen in series such as Dark Side of the Ring, the real world behind pre-determined wrestling matches can be far more intriguing than the spectacle itself. Such is the case with the Von Erich wrestling family from Texas. In 2023, the tragic saga of the Von Erich clan was dramatized in The Iron Claw. Any biopic is bound to take liberties with the truth for the sake of entertainment. In a recent episode of MAX’s series Hollywood Demons, the Von Erich family corrected some of the inaccuracies of The Iron Claw. As with many other films based on history, the truth is far more captivating than fiction.

From the Squared Circle to the Big Screen

Much like the world of professional wrestling itself, The Iron Claw is designed to entertain its audience through spectacle and suspension of disbelief. However, the film falls into the pitfall that so many other biopics have fallen prey to–condensing too much and relying on the audience to be familiar with the facts beforehand. The saga of the Von Erich family is one of ambition, a legacy, and personal tragedies interwoven together. While The Iron Claw took its fair share of liberties, many of the key facts of the Von Erich tragedy were addressed in the film.

The saga of the Von Erich family begins with the family’s patriarch, Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany), who rose to stardom by portraying a vicious heel. The beginning of The Iron Claw depicts Fritz in the ring with black and white footage, a la Raging Bull. According to the surviving members of the Von Erich family interviewed in Hollywood Demons, Fritz’s depiction as an overbearing, antagonistic patriarch is a dramatization and far removed from reality.

10 Wrestlers Who Need Biopics Now That We Have The Iron Claw

The Iron Claw has provided us with a look into the world of professional wrestling. Now, here are 10 more wrestlers who need a biopic.

The Iron Claw follows Fritz’s sons as they make a name for themselves as the top draws for World Class Championship Wrestling and the tragedies that coincide with their rise to prominence. Kevin (Zac Efron), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), David (Harris Dickinson), and Mike (Stanley Simons) all have tragedies affecting them in one way or another. David Von Erich would die while on tour in Japan under mysterious circumstances; Kerry and Mike would both commit suicide following arrests related to drug charges, leaving Kevin as the sole surviving sibling.

Exorcising Personal Demons and Uncovering the Truth

A remark that gets used in discourse regarding the history of professional wrestling is the alleged “Von Erich Curse.” Based on the tragedies that befell a wrestling family who were devout in their faith and exceptional in their talent, one might be led to believe in such a phenomenon. MAX’s Hollywood Demons series dug deeper into the matter with truthfulness and clinical analysis. Interviews with Kevin Von Erich and the children of his brothers shed light on some of the inaccuracies in The Iron Claw, whether it’s the inaccurate portrayal of Fritz or the situations that led to the downward spiral of the brothers.

While spectacle, storytelling, and suspension of disbelief have all been closely tied to the world of professional wrestling, so has substance abuse. The use of steroids, painkillers, and other substances that allow wrestlers to achieve their in-ring exploits has been well-documented over the past several decades. Dr. Drew Pinsky, a noted specialist in addiction and substance abuse, serves as a clinical consultant on Hollywood Demons, providing in-depth analysis on many cases. A glaring fault in The Iron Claw is a scene where Kevin, as portrayed by Zac Efron, refers to his family curse when on a date with his future wife. The idea of this mysterious curse is refuted by those who knew the family personally, and attribute the tragedies to the by-products of bad decision-making.
