The British television crime drama series, Top Boy, was created and written by Ronan Bennett. First airing back in 2011, Top Boy is set in the fictional Summerhouse estate in the London Borough of Hackney and focuses on two drug dealers Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane Robinson) and finds the pair tackling drug-dealing and gang violence while trying to make a success of themselves.

Led by Ashley Walters and rapper Kane Robinson (Kano), Top Boy ran for three seasons before being canceled in 2014. Following interest from rapper and musician Drake, Netflix picked up Top Boy for a revival in 2017, with the show now all set to conclude with its upcoming fifth season.

Top Boy has been met with critical acclaim throughout its run and has received several awards from the British Academy Television Awards, including wins for the British Academy Television Craft Award for Best Original Music, British Academy Television Craft Award for Best Director: Fiction and the British Academy Television Craft Award for Best Scripted Casting, as well as nominations for the British Academy Television Award for Best Mini-Series and the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress for Jasmine Jobson in her role as Jacqueline “Jaq” Lawrence.

Top Boy Adds Academy Award Nominee Barry Keoghan to the Fray

The fifth and final season of Top Boy brings back the likes of Ashley Walters, Kane ‘Kano’ Robinson, Little Simz, Jasmine Jobson, Saffron Hocking, Adwoa Aboah and Araloyin Oshunremi among others, while adding Academy Award nominee and The Batman star Barry Keoghan to the fray as the mysterious Johnny. Peaky Blinders and The Lazarus Project star Brian Gleeson will also join the world of Top Boy as a character named Tadgh.

The fifth season of Top Boy being the show’s last was confirmed last year, with both Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson releasing a statement at the time. “While the journeys of Dushane and Sully have remained at the core of the show, the new characters that have entered the world of Top Boy have become a key part of the show’s legacy, representing each new storyline in a raw, authentic way,” they said.

“For those that have followed the journey from the start, you will know how much this show means to everyone on our team and we wholeheartedly know how much it means to you,” they added. “These characters have been a part of our lives for over a decade now and without everyone’s support we couldn’t have come this far.”

The pair concluded saying, “With all this being said, and staying true to our original goal, every story must have an ending and so season three will be our finale. A chance to come full circle and end the journey in the right way.”

The final season of Top Boy is now scheduled to debut on Netflix on September 7, 2023.
