Tributes pour out after ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ actor Nicholas Brendon dies at 54

Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for playing lovable sidekick Xander in all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died, aged 54.

His family shared news of his passing in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter on Friday (March 20), saying that he died in his sleep of “natural causes”.

“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans,” it read.

“He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”

In 2023, Brendon revealed that he’d suffered a heart attack and had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. He also had Cauda Equina syndrome – a neurological condition caused by compression of the nerve roots at the base of the spine – which required several spinal surgeries.

Aside from Buffy, he appeared in film and television roles as recently as 2021. During breaks from the show, he starred in genre films like Demon Island and Unholy.

Other prominent TV roles included a recurring stint on Criminal Minds and a one-season stint on the sitcom Kitchen Confidential, an adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s memoir of the same name that saw him act opposite Bradley Cooper.

He also made guest appearances in Private Practice, Faking It and Without A Trace.

Born in 1971, Brendon originally dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but decided to pursue acting in an effort to manage his stutter, a disorder he’d later champion as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America at the peak of Buffy‘s popularity.

His co-stars were among the first to pay tribute, with Alyson Hannigan, who starred as Xander’s best friend Willow, writing: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP”

Emma Caulfield, who played Xander’s formerly demonic ex-fiancée Anya, shared a video of Brendon discussing their duet ‘I’ll Never Tell’ from the sixth season’s infamous musical episode, ‘Once More, With Feeling’.

“My heart is heavy,” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “I can’t put into words just how this has hit me. Let this clip of us giving it our all be a placeholder. Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”

In his later career, Brendon was candid about his struggles with substance abuse and mental illness. He was arrested multiple times and, from 2010 onwards, faced charges including felony vandalism, resisting or obstructing officers, criminal mischief and felony corporal injury to a spouse. The latter ended in a plea deal that included three years’ probation.

That troubled period saw him issue statements of apology and even make an appearance on an episode of Dr. Phil to shed light on his battle with addiction and mental health struggles.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, those close to Brendon were said to have been optimistic about his outlook and attitude of late, and had been hopeful that he’d finally turned a corner.

Among those survived by Brendon is his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, who, despite never pursuing acting, appeared alongside his brother on two episodes of Buffy.

His family concluded their statement by asking for privacy, as they grieved and celebrated  “the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart”.
