Underrated WWII Action Series ‘Rogue Heroes’ Finds Streaming Success on HBO Max

One of the best World War II action series in recent years is finally getting the recognition it deserves on streaming. This week marks the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima during the Second World War, and history buffs are taking to streaming services like HBO Max to binge any and all World War II-related stories on the platform. Alongside the critically acclaimed Band of Brothers, the more recent WWII-set series, Rogue Heroes, is flying up the streaming charts, as viewers are finally diving into one of the most underrated war series ever made.

Rogue Heroes is currently streaming on HBO Max, and audiences are getting lost in the action-heavy series. It is the eighth most watched show on the platform this week. Premiering in 2022, the series follows the birth of the famous branch of the British military, the SAS (Special Air Service), during the Second World War. Led by David Stirling (Connor Swindells) and Paddy Mayne (Jack O’Connell), the show depicts the SAS’s rocky founding, with the second season expanding on the team’s role during the invasion of Sicily. The series is an immense critical hit, boasting a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and was nominated for a BAFTA for its first season.

Created by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight, Season 1 leaned into the action/comedy vibe, thanks to the character of David Stirling. But Season 2 got far darker and more introspective. With Stirling in a POW camp, Paddy Mayne took over the SAS, and the infamous Irish soldier took the team down a far darker path. Sinners’ Jack O’Connell has had one hell of a year, with the aforementioned horror film being a critical success. But, he arguably gives his best performance so far in Season 2 of Rogue Heroes.

‘Rogue Heroes’ Will Return for a Third Season

The second season of Rogue Heroes found similar success when it was released earlier this year. The show retained its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Audiences were also more receptive to the show’s second season. Season 1 holds an impressive 83% audience rating, but Season 2 topped that with an 89% rating. With that increased success, a third season was almost a guarantee, and it’s officially going ahead with Steven Knight writing the script.

Fans are desperate for Rogue Heroes to return for a third season, especially with how Season 2 ended. Without going into spoilers (although it’s all based on real history), the second season ended with the Allies occupying Sicily, opening the doors to reclaim Europe. In the Season 2 finale, it was teased that the SAS were finally headed to mainland Europe. Not only would they join the main fight against the Nazis, but they would do so in one of WWII’s bloodiest and most notorious battles: Normandy.

Season 3 of Rogue Heroes is currently in the works. A release date hasn’t yet been revealed. Although production is rumored to begin in the coming months. However, given how busy Steven Knight is with the Peaky Blinders movie, those rumors might not be accurate.
