One movie that seemed destined to be the worst film of 2025 – and was, according to several critics – is now blocking the competition and building on its huge box office haul to dominate streaming on Max. That movie, of course, is A Minecraft Movie, which chicken jockeyed all the way to the top of the year’s highest-grossing film list back in April. While it may be about to lose its title as the highest-grossing American-made movie of 2025 to Lilo & Stitch, the Jack Black and Jason Momoa spectacle still has plenty to give after making its streaming debut.
For those who have been under a block for the last several months, A Minecraft Movie is based on the popular video game that allows users to build and explore in a world made entirely of square blocks. Someone had the ridiculous idea of trying to turn this into a film that didn’t completely suck, and somehow they did it with a storyline that goes something like this.
“Four misfits find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve.”

Renowned for his antics in the comedy scene, especially in the late 90s and early 2000s, Jack Black has also been featured in non-comedic roles.
Black, who plays Steve, is once again a driving force behind a movie that he seems to have been made for, and he even scored a record-breaking hit song out of it with “Steven’s Lava Chicken” (You’re singing it now, we know). And from viral songs to viral reactions, there was nothing about A Minecraft Movie that suggested its streaming debut would be anything short of spectacular – which has now been proved with its chart-topping position.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Sequel Is Guaranteed
Warner Bros. Pictures
Before the release of A Minecraft Movie, projections for the movie’s opening weekend were well in the ballpark of “alright,” but certainly did not suggest the film would become the highest-grossing movie of the year. However, the opening weekend haul shattered all expectations, and the movie ended up with a total worldwide gross of $954 million. That means one thing – a sequel is guaranteed.
Director Jared Hess previously discussed what’s to come in the world of Minecraft, teasing the sequel that is inevitable considering the impressive performance of the film. While he is not yet signed on to make a sequel – and indeed such as sequel is yet to be officially green lit – he does have some ideas, including how the post-credits scene would lead into the second movie’s story.
“We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
