When it rains, it pours – and right now, it’s thunderstorming in the Bronx.
The New York Yankees got a massive injury scare when superstar outfielder Aaron Judge took a baseball to the face during Saturday’s game against the Mets at Citi Field. While the team was coming off the field at the end of the fourth inning, shortstop Anthony Volpe tossed the ball to Judge, who apparently didn’t see it and was hit in the face.
Fortunately, Judge didn’t appear to sustain any serious injury, although he was spotted wearing a Band-aid above his eye in the fifth inning.
Judge ended up playing all nine innings, finishing his day 0-for-4 with a walk.
The scare to Judge’s health comes a few hours after the Yankees announced that starter Clarke Schmidt requires season-ending elbow surgery. The Bronx Bombers also entered Saturday having lost five straight and six of seven to drop out of first place in the AL East for the first time since mid-April.
The Yankees’ skid continued Saturday with a 12-6 loss to the Mets, their sixth straight defeat. They now sit three games back of the division-leading Toronto Blue Jays.
