We Will Be Bringing You a Third One

Summary

  • Big Little Lies, based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, will be returning for a third season, according to star Nicole Kidman.
  • The show initially premiered in 2017 as a miniseries and received critical acclaim, winning several awards.
  • Kidman’s statement contradicts previous reports that a third season would not be happening, but there has yet to be official confirmation from MAX.

Based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies was the breakout hit that premiered on MAX in 2017, and returned for a second season in 2019. Since then, audiences have assumed that the series would not be returning, but according to star Nicole Kidman, a third season will be happening.

Originally billed as a miniseries, Big Little Lies focuses on five women (Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz) who find themselves wrapped up in a murder investigation in the town of Monterey, California, while showcasing the effects of abuse and trauma. The show also featured Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, James Tupper and Jeffrey Nordling in supporting roles, with acclaimed actress Meryl Streep joining the series in its second season. Big Little Lies was the subject of widespread recognition, earning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series in 2017, with several cast members also taking home awards for their individual performances.

Since it’s conclusion in 2019, audiences figured the show was done, but now Nicole Kidman (who also served as executive producer on the series) has come out saying that a third season could be in the works. Speaking at a CME Group Tour Championship event, the Oscar-winning actress mentioned how Big Little Lies came along at a time in her life when she was considering retirement.

“I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children, and I was thinking I was going to retire, and then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show. And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success.”

She would then surprisingly reveal that Big Little Lies season three would be happening.

“We will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.”

While fans are now hopeful for Big Little Lies season three, Kidman’s comments come as a surprise based on previous interviews with other cast members, and even the Chairman and CEO of Content at HBO and MAX, Casey Bloys. Season one director Jean-Marc Vallée passed away in December 2021 after suffering a heart attack at age 58, after which Zoë Kravitz stated in a GQ interview:

“We talked about doing a season 3 a lot. Unfortunately, Jean-Marc Vallée, our incredible director, passed away this last year. It’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine going on without him. He really was the visionary for that show. Unfortunately, it’s done.”

In 2019, when asked about a potential third season by TVLine, Bloys mentioned how he loved the cast, but a third season was not realistic.

“I love this group of people — I would do anything with them. But the reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood. … I just think it’s not realistic.”

Though Kidman’s comments point to Big Little Lies returning for a third season, there has yet to be any official word from MAX confirming her statement. Kidman can currently be seen in the Taylor Sheridan spy thriller, Special Ops: Lioness on Paramount Plus, and will be returning under the sea in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which hits theaters on December 22, 2023.
