Wes Anderson Says Gene Hackman Was “Furious” Over ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ and Never Spoke to Him Again

Wes Anderson has shared details on the conflicts that he encounted while working with the late great Gene Hackman on the set of The Royal Tenenbaums. Released in 2001, The Royal Tenenbaums was director Wes Anderson’s third feature film and featured an all-star cast that included Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angela Huston, Bill Murarry, Danny Glover, and Owen Wilson and a dysfunctional family centered on the patriarch of the group, Royal Tenenbaum played by Gene Hackman. Since the film’s release, it has been widely reported how much Anderson and Hackman clashed on the set of the film.

Speaking with The Sunday Times, Anderson spoke about his time working with Hackman on The Royal Tenenbaums. “Gene was very annoyed about the money. He was furious,” said Anderson. “Also, he didn’t want to do the film anyway. I talked him into it — I just didn’t go away. And everybody else said yes to the salary, so Gene just went with it — and that just became our way.”

New Health Report on Gene Hackman’s Family Home Reveals How the Couple’s Tragic Deaths Were Almost Inevitable

Health reports carried out on the home of Gene Hackman has revealed that it was a “breeding ground” for the virus that killed his wife.

When asked if he had ever connected with Hackman afterward, Anderson said, “Not a word. In fact, he left without saying goodbye.” The only time was at the premiere of the film. Anderson said:

“He was grumpy — we had friction. He didn’t enjoy it [making the movie]. I was probably too young, and it was annoying to him. And he liked it [the finished film]. But he told me he didn’t understand it when we were shooting. [Sighing] I wish I’d shown him ten minutes early on. Then, maybe, he would have said, ‘OK, I get it.'”

‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ is One of Hackman’s Best Roles

Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their New Mexico home on Feb. 26, 2025, with it being estimated they had been deceased for a week before being discovered. Hackman left behind one of the greatest careers an actor could ask for, with The Royal Tenenbaums considered one of his last great performances, winning a National Society of Film Critics Best Actor Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy. Some consider Hackman’s lead performance among the best in his career.

In many ways, the feud between Wes Anderson and Gene Hackman is very similar to what happened between Paul Thomas Anderson and Burt Reynolds on the set of Boogie Nights. Like Hackman, Reynolds was an iconic figure of the 1970s, working with one of the new exciting voices in movies at the end of the 90s and beginning of the 2000s. Reynolds and Paul Thomas Anderson also clashed on the set of Boogie Nights, but in the end, he wound up giving one of the best performances of his career and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Despite Reynolds and Hackman clashing with these new young filmmakers, the final films are among some of the best movies ever made.

Anderson’s latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, debuted at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival before it opens in theaters in limited release on May 30, 2025. The director has come a long way since The Royal Tenenbaums. No longer the up-and-coming director, Wes Anderson is one of today’s most well-respected auteur filmmakers. While it is sad that he and Hackman never got to reconnect before Hackman’s passing, their short time together resulted in a truly wonderful film.
