Yellowjackets Season 2 Has Officially Started Production

Cameras are rolling on the second season of Yellowjackets. Debuting on Showtime in 2021, the drama series turned out to be a tremendous hit for the network, pulling in widespread praise and garnering seven Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Because the show was an instant hit, it wasn’t long before the renewal order came in for Yellowjackets to get a second season on Showtime.

Now, production is officially in progress on season 2. The official Twitter account for Yellowjackets postage an image of the clapboard on the set, revealing that the cast and crew are now hard at work on the new episodes. The image does not provide a sneak peek at any of the cast members, though it is enough of a tease to get fans a bit more excited for the show’s return.

“Going feral,” the tweet reads. “Our Yellowjackets are back in production for Season 2.”

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets tells the story of a high school soccer team going down in a plane crash in 1996 along with the adult versions of the survivors in the present day. The younger cast included Sophie Nelisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Sammi Hanratty, Liv Hewson, and Courtney Eaton, while the adult cast members included Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, Lauren Ambrose, and Simone Kessell. The show also stars Ella Purnell and Steven Krueger, and Elijah Wood has joined the cast for season 2.

Yellowjackets Will Get “Weirder” in Season 2

Showtime

While season 1 was pretty insane, fans can expect for season 2 of Yellowjackets to get even more bizarre. Previously, co-creator Ashley Lyle teased what’s to come in the second season in a Deadline interview. Lyle says how the plan with this show was to make a series about “the best and the worst that people are capable of,” and that season 2 has allowed them to get “darker” and “weirder” with the story.

“I think that we’re just so excited to keep playing in this world. There are a lot of opportunities where we’re going and where we’ve been planning to go get darker and get weirder. We’ll likely get a lot more of both of those things but hopefully we can keep it fun.”

Fellow co-creator Bart Nickerson clarified that telling a compelling story is what’s most important, and while this particular show comes with a lot of shocking moments, that comes secondary to the show’s storytelling.

“I do think it would be a good bet to say the show will grow in all the directions that Ashley was pointing to. I also know that that is not necessarily the point or the driver of kind of that expansion as much as it is being prepared to go where the show takes us. Our intention is not necessarily to be kind of provocative and surprising, but we try to not be hemmed in as we explore all the fun stuff that is in this stew that is Yellowjackets.”

Season 2 of Yellowjackets does not yet have a premiere date on Showtime.
