A new trailer has been released for The Patrick Star Show, Nickelodeon’s upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff series following SpongeBob’s best pal. As the title suggests, Patrick is at the forefront of the series, but the show also highlights the other members of the Star family not seen on SpongeBob SquarePants. The animation looks familiar and Bill Fagerbakke is back as the voice of Patrick, as can be seen in the trailer below.
The new spinoff follows Patrick as he starts production of his own TV series. With Patrick’s family serving as his co-stars, The Patrick Star Show will introduce Tom Wilson as Cecil Star, Patrick’s fun-loving, happy-go-lucky dad, who always puts his family first; Cree Summer as Bunny Star, Patrick’s loving, sea star mom who is a kooky oddball; Jill Talley as Squidina Star, Patrick’s 8-year-old little sister who drinks her coffee from a sippy cup; and Dana Snyder as GrandPat Star, Patrick’s genius grandpa, and the most intelligent member of the Star family.
Familiar characters from the SpongeBob universe are expected to appear, so even though Patrick might be the literal Star this time, there will be plenty of ties to the original SpongeBob SquarePants series. With the same voice acting talent reprising the roles, this includes appearances from SpongeBob SquarePants (Tom Kenny), Squidward Tentacles (Rodger Bumpass), Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence), Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), and Plankton (Mr. Lawrence).
SpongeBob SquarePants’ Marc Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller, and Jennie Monica are co-executive producers of The Patrick Star Show. Claudia Spinelli, SVP of Animation Development at Nickelodeon, developed the series for television. Kelley Gardner oversaw the project for Nickelodeon.
A logline for The Patrick Star Show reads: “Follow everyone’s favorite sea star at home with his family as he hosts an imaginary variety show that comes from the bizarre and hysterical depths of his own brain.”
This spinoff series follows the launch of the prequel series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years on Paramount+. Featuring CG animation, the series follows younger versions of SpongeBob and his friends attending camp. The main voice cast members are all back to reprise their roles. Because of the pandemic, the movie SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge on the Run premiered on Paramount+ in March, and Kamp Koral also debuted alongside it.
More recently, there has been word of Sandy Cheeks getting her own spinoff movie as well. Last month, it was reported that Liza Johnson was on board to direct a hybrid feature that would place an animated Sandy into a live-action environment. Longtime SpongeBob writer Kaz also co-wrote the script with Tom J. Stern, who wrote and directed the live-action special SpongeBobAppreciation Day. The untitled Sandy Cheeks movie is said to be in the works for an undisclosed streaming service, and while Paramount+ seems likely, Nickelodeon could sell the movie to a higher bidder.
The Patrick Star Show is set to premiere on Nickelodeon on Friday, July 9, at 7 p.m. ET/PT. New episodes of the series will then be released weekly on every following Friday.
