Whoopi Goldberg Is Still Lobbying to Play Doctor Who After Jodie Whittaker’s Exit

Whoopi Goldberg is still hoping to be the Fourteenth Doctor. Since 2017, Jodie Whittaker has been serving as the lead character in Doctor Who, playing the Thirteenth Doctor, and she has since become one of the most popular incarnations of the Time Lord in the show’s history. Recently, it was announced that Whittaker will conclude her run in 2022, opening the door back up for another actor to take control of the Tardis.

After previously campaigning for the role, Whoopi Goldberg is reiterating that she’s up to play the Fourteenth Doctor. Named as an International Icon by the Edinburgh TV Festival, the Ghost star approached the subject of Doctor Who during an interview about her career. She admits that she still hopes to get the dream job, but believes that the odds are against her as an American. From the interview:

“I wanted to be Doctor Who and I still do. I think it would mean an evolution into being American and I don’t know that that’s correct for Doctor Who. I don’t know I can usurp that. As much as I love it, I love watching it still in all the iterations. There are certain things that are blatantly all English. Doctor Who is like that to me. It’s like Marmite. It’s very English and needs to stay that way.”

Jodie Whittaker is making her exit from the franchise next year after a three-season run. Showrunner Chris Chibnall is leaving the series alongside her, something that he says was their plan from the start. She will officially mark her exit in 2022 after three specials air on the BBC, giving the Doctor Who team plenty of time to cast the Fourteenth Doctor.

Goldberg, who’s been serving as a co-host on The View since 2007, had previously lobbied for the role. Speaking with former Doctor Who actor David Tennant on his podcast in 2019, Goldberg revealed that she actually approached BBC about doing the role, but she was turned down. Earlier this year, she told SFX Magazine that she was still holding out hope for one day becoming the first American to play the character.

“I was lucky enough to speak to Tom Baker about it – he’s the Doctor I know best,” Whoopi said. “For me, Tom Baker was the best Doctor. Of course, the younger Doctors are good, but when it comes to the older Doctors, it was always Tom Baker for me. I wanted to be the first female Doctor, but they have one. I said to [Tom], ‘I love the idea of an American Doctor Who’. I’m still trying to do it.”

Doctor Who might not be in the cards for Goldberg, but she still has a big project coming up for fans to look forward to. The actress will reprise the role of Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act 3, a sequel to the first two movies that’s in development at Disney+. In addition to starring in the movie, Goldberg is also on board as a producer alongside Tyler Perry. The project doesn’t yet have a release date officially set. This news comes to us from Deadline.
