Mindhunter Director Says Season 3 Might Happen If Fans ‘Make Enough Noise’

Will Mindhunter ever get a third season on Netflix? That still remains unclear more than two years after the second season arrived, but many of those involved are still hoping the show comes back for more new episodes. Recently, series director Asif Kapadia took to Twitter to encourage the fans to demand a new season from Netflix, hoping that this could actually get the wheels in motion.

Audiences around the world need let @netflix know that there is a real interest & demand for Season 3 of @MINDHUNTER_ if you make enough noise, It might actually happen…. #DavidFincher#mindhunterhttps://t.co/IZjDpxOX9k

Back in April, there were reports circulating that executive producer David Fincher had renewed talks with Netflix for a possible third season. This was reportedly because of Fincher strengthening his relationship with the streamer after signing a four-year deal followed by the immense success of his movie Mank. With Fincher at the helm, Mank was a big hitter at the Academy Awards with nominations for Best Picture and Best Director for Fincher. It doesn’t appear that much has come out of these rumored talks.

Last year, Fincher also cast some doubt as to whether the show would ever really come back. Speaking with Vulture, he said the production on Mindhunter had been rather difficult for him, noting, “We lived there for almost three year. Not year in and year out, but … probably six or seven months a year … Mindhunter was a lot for me.”

Of its large budget, which also hurts the chances for a renewal, Fincher added: “Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season 2. And on some level, you have to be realistic – dollars have to equal eyeballs.”

Mindhunter was created by Joe Penhall. The show follows the Behavioral Science Unit in the FBI in the late 1970s during the early days of criminal profiling. The drama is known for featuring notorious murderers including Cameron Britton as Ed Kemper, Jack Erdie as Richard Speck, Sam Strike as Montie Rissell, Oliver Cooper as David Berkowitz, and Damon Herriman as Charles Manson. Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv starred as members of the BSU.

In January 2020, it was reported that the lead stars had been released from their contracts, effectively putting the show on indefinite hold. It was not officially canceled, but with David Fincher’s increasingly busy schedule, no plans were made to move forward with more Mindhunter. Soon after, a Netflix rep told TVLine, “David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots. He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”

Time will ultimately tell if Mindhunter ever gets a third season, but the fans are certainly still wanting more. As director Asif Kapadia says, having fans making it more clear that they want a renewal can only help its chances. You can watch seasons 1 and 2 streaming on Netflix.
