No Way Home’s Press Screenings Only Show 40 Minutes of the Movie

When it comes to avoiding Marvel secrets being revealed too early, the studio seems to be taking action to prevent information leaking ahead of time.

It seemed like only minutes after the world premiere of Eternals revealed Harry Style’s surprise role in the mid-credit scene, that the spoiler was posted far and wide on the internet without any subtlety or any way of those looking to avoid such information from…well, avoiding it. Whether it is coincidence or a case of once bitten twice shy, according to a number of usual sources, including Big Screen Leaks, the press screenings for Spider-Man: No Way Home will only include a reported 40 minutes of footage from the movie to give those in attendance enough of an idea of the film to go into press events and junkets.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

While it has been said that the same group will also be invited back to see the whole film at a later date, the full movie is believed to be not getting an airing until the premiere to prevent certain spoilers from being leaked in advance. We already know that there are so many rumors about the appearance of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in the final third of the movie, the potential for a sixth villain that hasn’t been disclosed to turn up with the five that have been revealed, and of course whatever post credit scenes come with the movie, and Marvel will be keen to make sure these remain exactly that until the last possible moment.

The debut of Harry Styles as Eros in Eternals was tweeted by a Variety writer in the moments after the movie’s world premiere, leading Walt Disney Studios President of Marketing Asad Ayaz writing, “To our colleagues and friends in the press and fan community who will be watching Eternals in the days ahead, please help preserve the experience of this incredible film. Please do not post spoilers and reveals that so many have worked so hard to protect.”

The revelation about Styles’ cameo spread quickly through online media sites, with most reporting the news with at least a little stealth to allow readers the option to bail out if they didn’t want to read the news. Clearly this annoyed a lot of people at Marvel Studios and Disney, who, as Ayaz stated, work tirelessly to try and ensure that these movies arrive in cinemas with a sense of wonder, excitement and with at least some of their secrets intact. While thirty years ago, this was the easiest thing in the world, these days it is almost impossible with social media picking up and running with any small spoiler and emblazoning across every headline possible before you can avert your eyes.

When it comes to Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony and Marvel Studios have already been reported to have clashed over how much to show in the trailers, and as we also expect from Marvel, what we have seen so far is probably either not going to be in the movie or won’t be exactly as it has been edited to look, so if they can stop all that hard work being undone by holding back on advanced press screenings, then they are clearly going to take it.

In the end, all we know for certain is that Spider-Man: No Way Home will definitely divulge all of its secrets when it arrives in cinemas on December 17th.
