Ralph Macchio Says a Hilary Swank Cameo in Cobra Kai Could Happen

After we see The Karate Kid Part III star Thomas Ian Griffith return as Terry Silver in the next season of Cobra Kai, the star of The Next Karate Kid could be next. Serving as a continuation of The Karate Kid and its sequels, Cobra Kai stars William Zabka and Ralph Macchio with the two reprising their respective roles as Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso. In the first three seasons, we’ve seen a variety of characters from the series joining the cast.

In a new interview with Jake Hamilton of Jake’s Takes, Macchio addressed the potentiality of certain other characters from the franchise appearing in Cobra Kai. Specifically, he was asked about Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, the stars of The Karate Kid remake who played characters similar to Daniel and Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi. Because the film is a remake set in a different cinematic universe, Macchio explains that such a cameo isn’t possible, as they’re only acknowledging the movies which featured the Mr. Miyagi character.

“Here’s the thing. It’s a great question, and there’s a simple answer why that won’t work in the Cobra Kai universe, because the guys, (series creators) Jon, Josh and Hayden, talk about the Miyagiverse. Anyone who knew about Mr. Miyagi and interacted with Mr. Miyagi is canon for our show, for the Cobra Kai show. Where as in, the characters of Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, they were not in that world. It was a remake.”

Unless an upcoming season introduces a multiverse into Cobra Kai, we probably won’t see the characters from the remake coming in. However, Macchio takes it upon himself to tease the potential arrival of Julie Pierce, played by Hilary Swank in The Next Karate Kid. While Macchio did not appear as Daniel in the fourth Karate Kid movie, Pat Morita co-starred with Swank in the movie for his final portrayal as Mr. Miyagi. This means the door is wide open for Julie Pierce to enter the fray.

“To the flip side of that, someone like Julie Pierce, who is Hilary Swank’s role, did know Miyagi. So there’s always a chance for maybe that.”

The Next Karate Kid was written by Mark Lee and directed by Christopher Cain. With Ralph Macchio moving on from the movie series at this point, the sequel stars Hilary Swank as Julie Pierce, the first theatrical starring role for the actress. While the film was heavily panned at the time of its release, many of the critics were still kind to Swank, and the movie has been credited for giving the actress her breakout performance.

It’s important to note that The Karate Kid Part III wasn’t extremely well-received by fans at the time of its release either, but people are nevertheless stoked to see Terry Silver’s return in season 4. With another season guaranteed to be on the way, with the show having recently wrapped season 5, we can only wonder what’s to come ahead. For now, we can check out the fourth season of Cobra Kai when it starts streaming on Netflix on Dec. 31.
