The Rock Believes He Was Born to Play Black Adam

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson believes unequivocally that he was born to play Black Adam. Hard to disagree with that. Speaking with Men’s Journal, the action superstar discusses his passion for the DC antihero role, the sheer level of physical preparation that he has endured to bring the character to life, and how long he has waited to suit up and change the hierarchy of power.

“I started training for Black Adam when I came out of the womb. I believe I was born to play this character. But in all honesty, this project has been with me for 10 ten years now. The process began when we started to stand the material up and really developed it into what it is present day. Once the start date was agreed on by our Seven Bucks production company, the rest of my team, Warner Bros. Studio, and DC Comics, I started to build an exhaustive training program with my coach Dave Rienzi. I wanted to come into this in the best shape of my career.”

While The Rock says some of these things with the usual wink-slash-tongue-in-cheek attitude that audiences love him for, it’s not hard to believe that he began bench pressing soon after being born. The actor also bears a striking resemblance to the comic book counterpart, Black Adam, with many fans feeling for some time that he is indeed the perfect choice to bring the character to live-action life.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, Black Adam will introduce Dwayne Johnson as Teth-Adam AKA Black Adam, a man from Kahndaq who was imprisoned for 5,000 years. Chosen by the wizard Shazam to harness the powers of the ancient Egyptian Gods, S for the stamina of Shu, H for the swiftness of Horus, A for the strength of Amon, Z for the wisdom of Zehuti, A for the power of Aten, and M for the courage of Mehen.

A recent synopsis has shined further light on the direction of Black Adam and reads, “Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.”

Alongside the titular antihero, Black Adam will also introduce audiences to the superhero team The Justice Society of America. Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell, and Pierce Brosnan will make up the team, with producer Hiram Garcia teasing the violent battles between the JSA and Black Adam to come. “Black Adam is edgy, right? That’s gonna be a PG-13 movie where it was very much like, say, The Dark Knight, where that pushed the edges of PG-13,” Garcia revealed. “I think we do that very much with Black Adam. We have a very high kill count in our movie.”

Black Adam is scheduled to be released on July 29, 2022.
