Rachel Zegler says she’s really excited to be a Latina princess in Disney’s Snow White remake regardless of any backlash on Twitter over her casting.
Snow White remake star Rachel Zegler wasn’t oblivious to the complaints on social media concerning her casting but it hasn’t gotten her any less excited about the job she has to do. Recently, Zegler and Andrew Garfield took part in a dual interview with Variety, speaking about their respective works. During the conversation, Zegler was asked about the Snow White movie, and for her part, she was more surprised than anyone about landing the part.
“Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me. You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries. Blanca Nieves is a huge icon whether you’re talking about the Disney cartoon or just different iterations and the Grimm fairy tale and all the stories that come with it. But you don’t particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that. When it was announced, it was a huge thing that was trending on Twitter for days, because all of the people were angry.”
While many fans were excited to see this remake moving forward with the West Side Story star in the lead, the social media complaints were hard to ignore. The bottom line, however, is that Zegler can’t wait to get started filming the movie because, as she sees it, she has a job to do now that she’s been cast as Snow White, regardless of any Twitter backlash.

Peter Dinklage Has Also Sparked Controversy Over the Remake
Disney
There is another big controversy related to the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remake, this concerning the titular dwarfs. Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage has contended that it’s “backwards” for Disney to remake this movie and include the dwarf characters as he seems to feel that it reinforces negative stereotypes about people living with dwarfism.
“I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me,” Dinklage said on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast. “You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f–king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f–k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”
Disney now faces a big problem, because not everyone agrees with Dinklage’s opinion. Several actors with dwarfism have since spoken out to say that they’d rather see Disney include dwarf characters in the remake, as this would provide seven major roles in a Disney blockbuster that now might not happen due to the criticism. A statement from Disney stated that they would be consulting with “members of the dwarfism community” as production on the remake moves forward.
No official release date has yet been set for the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remake. The original movie is streaming on Disney+.
