Maury Povich Confirms Talk Show Ending and Announces Retirement: ‘Enough Already!’

Daytime television mainstay Maury Povich will be wrapping up his talk show after 31 years on the air, marking the end of an era. It was recently reported that the series will be coming to an end after a total of 30 seasons with plans to wrap up production on the final episodes in May. Word is the last new episodes will continue to air until September, though the show will continue to air in syndication after the series finale.

We shouldn’t count on Povich continuing with a new talk show elsewhere. The television host has confirmed the news that Maury is ending while also revealing that it was in fact his idea to bring the show to a close, meaning this isn’t a sudden cancelation. Per Variety, Povich says he was ready to hang it up six years ago before he agreed to stick around for a little while longer, but he has known for a while that season 30 would be the last for the series.

“Six years ago when I was ready to retire, my the NBCUniversal family asked me to continue the show. Even though I told them I was ready for assisted living, out of loyalty to NBCUniversal and my more than 100 staff and crew members, Tracie Wilson and I agreed to one more deal. I’m so proud of my relationship with NBCUniversal and all those who worked on the Maury show but as I occasionally tell my guests on Maury, ‘Enough, already!’”

Tracie Wilson, executive VP of NBCUniversal Syndication Studios, also spoke about the show coming to its end. She says that this was discussed with Povich two years ago, though the news hadn’t been publicly announced until now. Wilson also praises Povich for the work he’s done through Maury for so many years.

“Maury and I decided two years ago that this season would be the farewell season for the show, and while his retirement is bittersweet, we are so happy for him to be able to spend more time on the golf course. Maury is a television icon, a pop culture legend and we couldn’t be more proud to have been a part of his incredible career.”

Maury Has Been a Staple of Daytime TV for Decades

While Maury will be sticking around with its repeats in syndication, it will feel strange knowing that the series is ending. Once a show has been on the air for decades, especially with a prominent presence on daytime television, viewers tend to grow accustomed to it. The series could get pretty silly and was known for pushing the envelope at times, yet Maury Povich had a certain charm to him that made the show entertaining to watch.

One of the most popular topics covered on the show would be lie detector test results, usually with people accused by their significant others of infidelity. Perhaps when it comes to naming Maury Povich as one of the most memorable television personalities of the past three decades, the lie detector test would determine that to be the truth.
