Ke Huy Quan Would ‘Absolutely’ Return in a New Indiana Jones Movie

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom star Ke Huy Quan is down to return as Short Round in a new Indiana Jones movie, and somebody at Paramount needs to make this happen. As it stands, Indiana Jones 5 has already wrapped filming, though it’s not set to release in theaters until next year. Quan was not involved with the sequel, and given that cameras have stopped rolling, it’s probably too late to see Short Round return in the film at this point to reunite with Harrison Ford’s Dr. Jones.

That doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve seen the last of Short Round. Potentially, the franchise might continue past the fifth movie, perhaps with a new hero leading the way if Ford chooses to be finished with the role after this next movie. In any case, Quan made it clear in a Reddit AMA that he’s 100% on board to return as Short Round in a new film, as here’s what the actor said when directly asked if he’d want to reprise the role for a future Indiana Jones movie.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“YES! Absolutely to more Indiana Jones movies.”

The former child star, who is now all grown up and regularly working as an actor again, also addressed his casting in The Temple of Doom and says he is grateful to be back in Hollywood as an adult so many years later.

“I didn’t pursue acting when I was kid. I happened to be at the right place and at the right time when Spielberg and Lucas was looking for an Asian kid to be Indy’s sidekick. And I just fell in love with it because it’s one of the best profession in the world. Feeling very blessed and grateful to be able to do this again after 2 decades absence.”

Ke Huy Quan’s Casting as Short Round Was Completely Unexpected

Paramount Pictures

Ke Huy Quan fell into acting pretty much by accident, as he didn’t even intend to audition for the role of Short Round. At the time, a young Quan had accompanied his brother to the auditions, and he was asked to read for the part when the casting director noticed him coaching his sibling. The next day, his mother got a call to bring him to a meeting with Steven Spielberg, though she dressed him in a suit that left him feeling uncomfortable. Spielberg noticed this and had the young actor come back the following day when he met the other big names involved with the project, learning that he’d landed the role. As Quan recently explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live:

“Steven came out, saw how uncomfortable I was, gave me the biggest hug, the warmest smile, and says, ‘Ke, I want you to come back the next day but wear something comfortable.’ And I went back the next day, I walked in the room, and there was Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Harrison Ford. And we spent an entire afternoon together, and three weeks later I was on a flight to Sri Lanka, and it was the best adventures of my life.”

Quan can be seen in A24’s new film Everything Everywhere All at Once alongside Michelle Yeoh and James Hong. The movie has scored high praise from both critics and filmgoers on Rotten Tomatoes.
