Colin Farrell Movie The Banshees of Inisherin Met With 13-Minute Ovation at Venice Film Festival

Perhaps we will see Colin Farrell entering the Best Actor race at the Academy Awards next year if the response to his newest movie is any indication. The actor stars in the new film The Banshees of Inisherin which screened at the Venice Film Festival. Farrell and his fellow cast and crew were met with tremendous applause when the film was over, with journalists present reporting that the screening sparked a 13-minute standing ovation. This is said to be the biggest response yet for any film at the festival, though Brendan Fraser’s The Whale had also garnered a very enthusiastic response.

The Banshees of Inisherin is written and directed by Martin McDonagh (Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), who has collaborated frequently in the past with the film’s lead stars, Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Batman) and Brendan Gleeson (Mr. Mercedes, The Tragedy of Macbeth); the two previously co-starred in McDonagh’s In Bruges. Banshees also stars Kerry Condon, Berry Keoghan, Pat Shortt, and Jon Kenny. It is produced by McDonagh, Graham Broadbent, and Peter Czernin.

The Banshees of Inisherin Explores the Value of Friendship

Searchlight Pictures

“I’m glad to see male friendship as something valuable at the moment when the readjustment of everyone’s relationships with everybody is under reconsideration,” Gleeson said of the film at the Venice Film Festival, per Deadline. “The valuing of male friendship against a bromance to me is very deep and pertinent right now.”

Touching on how interpersonal relationships are getting forgotten in the digital age, Farrell added, “When push comes to shove we will always return to good chats. It’s like the people who don’t believe in God until they’ve overdosed on a drug.”

Following its Venice Film Festival premiere, The Banshees of Inisherin will be hitting movie theaters on Oct. 21, 2022. Below you can watch the official trailer.
