Star Wars Rogue Squadron Offically Removed From Disney Schedule

Although the Star Wars franchise has been thriving since the arrival of Disney+, with hit series like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi becoming some of the biggest shows on the platform, its big screen presence has been languishing since the release of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. While there were originally some plans in place for new movie releases from Lucasfilm, it seems that, for the immediate future the last hope has been wiped from Disney’s upcoming release calendar. The Patty Jenkins-directed Rogue Squadron was the only movie on Lucasfilm’s release schedule, even though the movie itself seemed to have already been removed from their production slate last year, so while the news is not a huge surprise, it does seem like a final nail in the Rogue Squadron coffin.

Disney has unveiled the release dates for a number of non-Star Wars projects, such as Snow White being scheduled for a March 22, 2024 release, to be followed by Inside Out 2 on June 14, 2024 and Mufasa: The Lion King on July 5, 2024. However, while there are many movies coming in the next two years from Disney, there are now no Star Wars projects set for theatrical release anytime in the near future.

Rogue Squadron was originally announced back in 2020 and would have been the first theatrical Star Wars project to be released since the Skywalker Saga closed out with The Rise of Skywalker. Cracks started to show in the movie’s production when there had been no casting details or movement on the film, and in November 2021 it was revealed the movie was being delayed due to scheduling conflicts with Jenkins other projects. Now it seems that fans are going to have wait a little longer for Star Wars’ big screen return, and indefinitely for Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron.

Lucasfilm Recently Committed to Bringing Star Wars Back To Being A Theatrical Event

Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy has made it clear that Star Wars will return to theaters, and it is all about working out the best way to do that. While much of the Star Wars franchise has concentrated on Luke Skywalker in one way or another, the future of Star Wars movies is about going beyond the Skywalker Saga, which is possibly why Rogue Squadron no longer figures in the plans. Kennedy previously said:

“We’re moving further beyond the existing sequels as we look to our movie space. The sequel era] is what we talk a lot about in terms of where we’re going with our movies, and just how far out from that we’ll go. That’s very much the space we’re concentrating on.”

While Star Wars will continue to be a dominant part of Disney+, with a new season of The Mandalorian coming soon along with new series such as Andor and The Acolyte, there are also plans for The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson to return to the franchise with a new trilogy of movies, as well as a new Star Wars project being penned and directed by Thor: Love and Thunder’s Taika Waititi. How many of these movies will make it to cinemas, and when, is something that currently seems to be known only by a select few people.
