Man-Thing’s MCU Arrival Celebrated by Fans and the Character’s Creators

Werewolf by Night has been an undeniable success for Marvel Studios, delivering something unique and potentially far-reaching into the MCU, but one aspect that has really been celebrated is the introduction of Man-Thing. Marvel has always teased the arrival of new characters, and along with Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing’s arrival was a thing of beauty that has had both fans and the character’s creators falling in love with the creature that goes by the unlikely name of Ted.

Werewolf by Night arrived on Disney+ last week, just a month after it was finally given an official announcement by Marvel Studios and a first trailer. The black-and-white homage to classic horror movies of the 1930s and 1940s, as well as old seasonal TV specials, has been a huge hit with mostly everyone who has seen it, and that is something that has become apparent on social media, with fans unable to contain that delight at finally seeing Man-Thing arrive in the MCU – and more importantly not being disappointed by it. While Marvel Studios have frequently come under fire on social media for their use of CGI, with She-Hulk being the most recent show to get a tough time for the titular character’s appearance, Werewolf by Night has been a completely unprecedented triumph thanks to its flawless practical effects mixed with some flawless CGI elements. While the special was certainly helped along by its classy black and white presentation, there have been very few complaints by anyone when it comes to the execution of the 55-minute Halloween treat.

Director Michael Giacchino Was Thrilled To Being Marvel’s Monsters to Life

When it comes to delivering a horror-themed special, first-time director Michael Giacchino previously discussed it being already a big ask before he discovered that Kevin Feige also wanted to have Man-Thing as part of it. He said:

“It was Kevin Feige who asked me what I thought about him, and I was like, ‘What, are you kidding me? It’s one of my favorite comic runs in the world!’ It added a lot more pressure to me going, ‘Oh, not only is this [introducing] Jack Russell and then Elsa… These are two of my favorite characters and I’m gonna bring them in, but now you’re gonna give me this too?’ And I’ve got to bring all of this to the table … But it was all done out of love for these things. And hopefully, that comes through and hopefully, you feel that. Because I do love these characters.”

Werewolf by Night is only the beginning of the arrival of monsters to the MCU, and in the telling of its story, it has already explained why there have been so few Earthbound creatures like these so far and how they will not be freer to move around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future. The introduction of the special details the monsters of the MCU living under the surface of things, but with many of their greatest hunters being taken out of the game during Werewolf by Night, it will not be long before some of them start to slip out into the wider Marvel world.
