St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 10: This Is From Joyce

Critic’s Rating: 3 / 5.0

The latest St. Denis Medical episode throws its beloved characters into situations that are more likely to cause stress than amusement.

In the aftermath of breaking off her engagement to Sanderson, Joyce turns to Matt for emotional support, but he’s not well-equipped to provide it.

Meanwhile, Serena’s nice gesture to Alex is met with countless missteps.

Even Ron and Bruce have a tough time with their mistakes, though the stakes are higher when it comes to a bad investment.

St. Denis Medical finds its way back to its mission of providing laughs, but not before raising our blood pressure a little bit.

Ex-pectations

The ongoing Joyce engagement plotline has been an entertaining one to watch because nothing beats workplace relationship drama.

Matt and Joyce are an unexpectedly fun pairing because Joyce’s constant need to assert her needs perfectly complements Matt’s inability to say no to anything.

So, of course, Matt ends up getting put in the position of handing Sanderson his belongings back on behalf of his boss.

And even though Joyce insists she doesn’t want to see Sanderson, it isn’t surprising that she shows up anyway just to keep tabs on her ex.

Her desperation to prove she’s better off than her ex spirals, in a very typical Joyce fashion, into a poorly planned trip to Canada.

Having Matt as a voice of reason worked exceptionally well in this scenario, as he made astute observations about how Joyce has nothing to prove to Sanderson.

He seems like such a great pillar of support in a crisis that I honestly wish I could call him for emotional support in an emergency.

(Justin Lubin/NBC)

The conclusion of the storyline got a great laugh out of me, as only Joyce would mistakenly assume Matt has a crush on her when he refers to his past crush on Serena.

Botox, Bubbly, and Bad Times

Speaking of Serena, I was excited to get a peek at her life outside of work and her side hustle during this episode.

Even better, she invites Alex to help her with the “Botox and Bubbly” party she’s throwing, and the two women make such an iconic duo.

Unfortunately, the situation rapidly goes south as Alex begins to stress about Serena losing her license, which devolves into an argument about Alex breaking into someone’s purse.

(Justin Lubin/NBC)

As if things can’t get any wilder, a dog that swallows Botox suddenly enters the equation, and the plotline gets so chaotic that it becomes less fun to watch and more heartbreaking.

With the chaos of pouring soup into a bowl of hydrogen peroxide, the show loses its core focus of Serena and Alex’s friendship and Alex’s inability to relax.

The storyline returns to the rock-solid foundation of Alex and Serena’s unshakeable bond, even amid a fight over upsetting one of Serena’s clients.

Even though it was fun watching the party take unpredictable twists and turns, I almost wished the episode had stuck to a simpler conflict to highlight one of the sitcom’s best duos, rather than getting lost in the story.

Crypto Bros And Monetary Flows

Ron and Bruce haven’t been paired together since St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 4

But compared to the last time they were throwing parties at a conference, their storyline this time is a little more grounded.

In his desire to buy a massage chair, Ron decides to invest in crypto based on Bruce’s advice.

Bruce being a crypto bro makes so much sense for his character.

When he was talking Ron into buying “memecoin,” I was reminded of every conversation with finance bros that I wanted to run away from.

(Justin Lubin/NBC)

Ron’s susceptibility to schemes makes sense given his considerations of joining the cult-like religious community Matt had escaped from on St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 6

Given how volatile crypto investments are, the audience can see the eventual outcome of Ron’s investment in this modern-day multi-level marketing scheme from a mile away.

Despite the unfortunate outcome of his poor financial decisions, Ron still tries to find a silver lining, noting that this whole debacle has taught him the value of enjoying the small things in life.

While I appreciated his ability to find something to take away from the scenario, nothing prepared me emotionally for the stress of watching Ron watch his investment’s numbers plummet.

(Justin Lubin/NBC)

At times, the newest episode felt like an episode of The Bear, but I still chuckled at a few hilarious moments.
