Danai Gurira Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Michonne’s Debut on The Walking Dead

She may have since departed the series, but Danai Gurira still holds a special place in her heart for The Walking Dead. A full decade ago, Gurira made her debut on The Walking Dead as Michonne, a sword-wielding survivor who quickly become one of the show’s most popular characters. This was in the season 3 opener, “Seed,” which first premiered on AMC on Oct. 14, 2012.

Ten years to the day later, Gurira took to Twitter to acknowledge the anniversary. Posting a slew of photos from her time as Michonne, Gurira reflected on how much she still loves and appreciates the character along with all of the support she had gotten from her Walking Dead family during and after her time spent on the series.

“10 years ago today on October 14th, 2012, Michonne made her first appearance on The Walking Dead,” Gurira wrote in a Twitter thread. “I love this chick, and playing her on screen has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. None of this would have been possible without the overwhelming love and support from all of you. And my incredible TWD Family.”

Teasing more to come with the planned limited series focused on Michonne and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), she added, “So many amazing memories. I can’t express my gratitude enough. And we ain’t done quite yet.”

Michonne Will Return in a Walking Dead Spinoff

AMC

Gurira left The Walking Dead during its penultimate tenth season, though Michonne’s story was kept open-ended as the character was not killed off. In July, it was announced that Gurira would reprise the role for a limited series reuniting Michonne with Rick Grimes. Originally, there were plans for this story to be used to develop a trilogy of movies, but this has been retooled to serve as a limited series on AMC.

“Rick and Michonne are two of my favorite people and Danai and Andy are two of my favorite people,” Walking Dead boss Scott M. Gimple said of the spinoff. “Working with all of them continues to be a dream come true. The three of us, along with a terrific team of TWD all-stars and incredible new voices, are crafting an insane love epic worth the long, long wait.”

An official logline for the untitled spinoff provided by AMC reads:

This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?

Rick and Michonne’s Walking Dead spinoff will arrive on AMC sometime in 2023.
