Fox will double down on its plans to further expand its slate of animated originals with an early renewal for the upcoming series Grimsburg. Deadline reports that the network has officially renewed Grimsburg for season 2 months before the show will have its series premiere aired in 2023. The series, featuring Jon Hamm voicing the lead character, was first announced in October 2021.
“I am very excited to be involved in the Fox animation universe,” Hamm said at the time. “A universe I have been actively watching since the early nineties. The opportunity to get to bring a project like Grimsburg to life that is so particular and unique, and to work with its incredibly imaginative and hilarious creators is one I can’t wait to get started with.”

Fox Entertainment’s president of entertainment, Michael Thorn, added: “As we continue to expand our animation brand beyond family comedies, Grimsburg’s wildly funny, bizarre and inventive take on the crime genre makes it the perfect next generation Fox comedy. And with Jon Hamm front and center as Marvin Flute, the deeply troubled detective with very eclectic taste and opinions, we believe this may finally be Hamm’s breakout role as a leading man.”
More recently, Thorn announced the show’s early renewal at a Mipcom panel. The show was created by Catlan McClelland and co-written by Matthew Schlissel, while Hamm executive produces with the Jackal Group’s Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady, Donnie Tavel, and showrunner Ghadd Gindin. You can read the provided description of the series below.
The series follows Marvin Flute (Hamm), who might be the greatest detective ever to catch a cannibal clown or correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire. But there’s one mystery he still can’t crack: his family. Now that he’s back in Grimsburg, a town where everyone has a secret or three, Flute will follow every lead he’s got to redeem himself with the ex-wife he never stopped loving, even if it means hanging out with the son he never bothered to get to know.

Recently, Fox also gave an early renewal to another animated show that won’t be debuting until 2023. Krapopolis, created by Dan Harmon, is an animated series set in ancient Greece that imagines gods having more of a sitcom-style life. A preview of the series will arrive in November, and while it’s not premiering until 2023, it was also renewed for season 2.
Meanwhile, Fox has been turning away other animated shows to put more investment into original programming. It was also revealed that a planned revival of King of the Hill won’t be moving forward at Fox as the network does not own the majority rights. Time will tell how audiences ultimately respond to these new shows and if the investment in new series like Krapopolis and Grimsburg will be the right direction to go. You never know what will be the series that becomes the next The Simpsons.
